I let DS have one before breakfast yesterday because i felt that was part of the fun of Halloween (he asked for it, i didn't offer). He wanted more before supper and this morning before breakfast too and while I don't want to restrict him too much, i am now saying he has to eat his meal first and then he can have a treat (morning after Halloween was the only exception). He has been okay with that. I let him have it with snacks yesterday too. He was going back and forth between a chocolate chip cookie we baked on halloween and raspberries and cheese that i packed.

I am basically fine with not limiting to a certain number per day as long as he is getting a balance of food groups overall. It seems to be working.

The kids eat a little candy the night of Halloween, and then we let them trade the candy for a toy at the toy store! I was skeptical it would work this year (especially for my daughter, who loves candy!), but it totally worked like a charm... not sure how many years longer it will work, but I'll take it for now!

A few pieces a day for a few days and then I make DH take most of it to work! I save their favorites for our treat jar for once a week movie/treat nights.

I let him pick out three pieces last night after we got back home and he was content with that! I also let him pick one small piece to put in "his cupboard" (our deal has always been that he can put special food items in his cupboard in exchange for staying in bed. It's not typically candy though!). And then I've let him have some for good behavior, or if he eats all his food he can have some.
So he's getting anywhere from 1-4 pieces a day. It won't last much longer!

My son is 3 and also knows what's going on now. This morning I told him I inspected the candy last night and had to take away the ones that weren't safe. *Cut to me and my husband raiding the stash.* Seriously, though, I left 1 bag of mini m&ms and some fruit snacks and pretzels in the pumpkin. Seemed ok with that but still asked today about candy. I hope he forgets about it because I took the rest to work today to give away.

@sorrycharlie: mine is all about the groceries. Girlfriend would never forget!

She had a piece after each meal today. She also got a whole bag of gummy worms from one neighbor and was busted sneaking them this afternoon. I didn't think she'd be able to open the bag. I underestimated her.

We have her one after church festival and she hasn't asked for more. She's 3 but knows candy is only for special treats.

I'm thankful. My closest friend has a child who will throw a huge tantrum if they can't finish out the whole basket. Poor thing usually eats too much and throws up.

We didn't have to ration this year, but my son has clear favorites, so it's not like he'd just eat all of it. He cares so little about it that when we were running out last night, he offered to get his bucket that he had collected in my husband's office.

@tinyperson: absolutely. We are pretty anal about not giving a lot of sweets. Most people think we're crazy strict, I'm sure. But she is crazy hyper with sugar!!! My brothers didn't believe me and made a comment about how hyper she was the last time he got her ice cream. I said "I told you so!" :P

My daughter is 3.5 and it hasn't been a problem. Yesterday I let her have one lollipop before lunch but after second breakfast. She got another piece of candy in the afternoon. After ToT she got another two pieces. We don't generally have sweets in the house so I think to her having that many in one day was huge!

Today she has been asking for a lollipop all day and I told her after her nap. She's yet to take a nap and asked no less than 12x for it already. According to her, closing her eyes for 5 seconds equals a nap. 😜 Uh. no.

@yellowbird: ditto to sweets being a treat. It's a reward for good behavior such as listening and not throwing tantrums, etc

Yesterday, after her lollipop she said "mommy, that was such a yummy treat!" Lol

I was a little worried about this but we've been winging it and it's been fine so far. LO is 2. Last night she had a mini bag of M&Ms, a mini bag of Skittles and half of a mini kit kat before she got cut off. Mommy & Daddy dined while watching Final Destination. 😜

Today she was talking about ToT but didn't bring up candy until DH did - rookie! So then we let her have a mini bag of M&Ms. Surprisingly she accepted it when we said, "All done." I think she'll get a little more tonight and then it goes to work with Daddy in the morning.

I let her have one chocolate and a rice crispy square at church today, but I notice such a huge difference in behaviour when she has sugar that I think I'm putting it all away and going back to the one smartie on occasion treat that we usually do. I feel like a mean mom, but I do notice a massive difference.

@honeybear: haha, this made me LOL. Same deal at our house. The older one tried to negotiate a piece every day but I just explained that it's not healthy to have daily just like other treats and he accepted it. Also, I made sure it was put away before I went to bed and they haven't mentioned it at all.

I just ration it. We often have chocolate in the house (although not usually Kit Kats...), so he knows that Halloween candy is the same deal as 'normal' chocolate/dessert--it is bestowed upon him at irregular intervals by his benevolent ruler who does not react favorably to whining. ;)

We did the switch witch too. I gave her a $25 voucher I made in exchange for all of the candy just so she could see the exchange. We'll go get a toy later today. My DH is bringing all of the candy to share with his office coworkers. My DD is not much of a snacker or foodie though so she would rather have a new toy.

We did the switch witch, but he got to eat quite a bit yesterday and kept 10 pieces. The rest he traded for a couple of books. He was psyched. With the 10 pieces, we'll do one a day, probably after lunch. He'll be 3 next month, but if history repeats itself from the homecoming parade, he'll only remember for a couple of days.

It's 9am and I'm letting DS have his little bag of chips!

All his candy from daycare I put away in the pantry and told him it was for special treats, he hasn't asked for it.

Now he is just wanting his candy and saying no is not getting a good response. Good thing he can't open them! Better get this stuff in the pantry too!

I'm hoping in a day or two he forgets about the candy.

Oh, we're totally rationing them. We don't really keep sweets in the house so it's an extra special treat. He can have one piece after each meal, as long as he finishes the meal, lol. 3 pieces feels like a lot, but they are pretty small, so I guess it's okay.
