@coopsmama: @ShootingStar: yeah, unfortunately CIO has never worked in our house and he has some other stuff going on that makes it harder to get on board with CIO for him.

@Winterbee15: thankfully we did! DH did bath and bedtime, which thankfully was really easy because LO was so tired, he was out in 5 minutes lol. I was worried it'd go the other way with him being overtired. I capitalized on the opportunity to go to sleep early and I feel a lot better today!

I still consider 3 or 4 the motn! With dd (3) I might get her some water but she knows morning is when the sun is up and so far I've forced her back in bed. When she was a baby I stuck her in the pnp next to our bed.

@coopsmama: and @ShootingStar: Totally agree! I would go make sure that there is not actually something wrong. And after that, I would tell them they need to go back to sleep because it is still night time and close them in their room and go back to bed. They do not get to decide that the day starts in the middle of the night.

@ShootingStar: Yup.

I go in and check and see why they woke up. Feeling sick? Peed through diaper? Teeth pain? Congestion? Too hot/warm? And it it's none of the above I put them back down after rocking for 5 minutes and tell them it's night and they need to sleep.

They can cry if they need to but I'm not going to let them get up in the middle of the night. 6am is the earliest in our house that we allow them to get up - which is when my husband is up for the day.

It's okay for kids to learn boundaries and that they don't get to decide things like that.

My son often wakes up in the MOTN and sleeps with us for the rest of the night. Sometimes, though, he won't settle down. This happened on Saturday night. I told him multiple times that he would have to settle down or go back in his crib, and I finally followed through. He cried/whined for a few minutes in his crib then fell back to sleep. And then he woke up at 6:30, came back into our bed, and FELL ASLEEP TIL 9:30!!! Wow. That was amazing and unprecedented. (He is 21mos.)

We let him cry it out if he's up too early. But I know my kid, there's no way he wants to be up for the day at 3 or 4, even if he has trouble getting back to sleep. We go in and replace the paci and try to get him relaxed and back to sleep, but if it doens't work we leave and let him self soothe. 3am is the middle of the night to me, it's not time for him to get up.

@irene: We have the clock too. At 3am he would definitely go back to sleep, but if it was closer to wake up time he might not. He know to look at books/play with his stuffed animals quietly in the cot until his clock changes though. That said he cannot get out of his cot - I dread to think what will happen when he can!

Ah so sorry! How old is your toddler?

We have a clock that we purchase from Amazon, and a green light lits up at the time you set it to be. So say I want him to stay in bed until 6:30am. I will set the clock to turn green at 6:30am. I will explain over to over to LO that if he wakes up before the clock turns green, it is probably way too early, and he should try to go back to sleep. Because it is not morning time yet. (Or at least, stay in your room and play quietly until the clock turns green because mommy needs to rest, haha)

It may or may not work depending on your LO, but it is an idea I thought I'd throw out! xoxo

This used to happen a lot and still does on occasion but it's more like 4:45am wake up when it does. Since he is confined to his room and not potty trained, if it's early enough we go in to change him with lights off and in hushed tones explain that it's still nighttime, than leave him until wake up time which is 6/6:30. Rarely he will fall back asleep but he usually is okay with entertaining himself. If it's closer to wake up time we just leave him. Sometimes he screams bloody murder (usually when he is overtired) but for the most part he will play until we come get him. We used to get him whenever he woke up and watch tv/play in s zombie like state but we realized it wasn't doing him or us any favors since we were all so tired and cranky!

Lo is often up around 4:30 for the day.... We usually take turns-- I'm up w her for the first hr then dh takes over and I go back to sleep. The weekend before last dh was out of town so we watched tv, which we rarely do, but mama can't function that early on her own! Lol
