Spur of the moment baths are a winner in our house! With foam soap and splashing. Sometimes, just moving play to a different room helps.

We have some premade crafts that I take out when we can't get outside or go somewhere. He also loves it when we draw, cut/glue shapes, and when I let him pretend to bake things with ingredients. Basically, anything messy ;)

My LO loves glueing - I just cut out pictures from magazines or old cards, or even just rip up bits of coloured paper, and he uses pva glue to make 'collages'. I just lay a plastic mat over our coffee table, put him in a long sleeve bib and wipe it down with baby wipes afterwards. He's almost 2.

Often though I find that when he is acting bored and whingy, he actually responds best to some independent play in his room. It seems to recharge him somehow.

When we're bored we bake, clean, or read books. Or run errands. But my LO is always up for cooking. We make cookies or muffins a lot because those are hard to mess up (with toddler help) and easy to eat up.

I want to get into painting and other creative crafts soon but I am dreading having paint everywhere.

What do you do to get them out of that rut?

It seems like when my LO's are bored, if I don't help break the boredom cycle then the rest of the day becomes a huge whine fest due to boredom. They will do great for several weeks or even months but then I think they get bored with their toys, or outgrow some. I want to have other activities on hand, maybe art or baking related to break up the day. Would love to hear some ideas that can be done at home, and don't require too much prep! It's raining here today so going outside isn't an option.
