@Honeygold89: After that dose of Tylenol and another nap she's been fine, so I didn't call or take her in. We'll see how she's feeling tomorrow, I guess.

We are very much in the wait and see camp, but I am always big on going with your gut. Third time may be the charm for that darn ear infection? I haven't actually taken either in for fevers- came close once with a 3 day fever and a rash another time, but we also aren't limited by needing to return to daycare because of work constraints.

Ultimately if I can avoid bringing them into the pediatrician's which exposes them to more sick kiddos, I'd rather stay home and wait it out if they are ok on Tylenol or Ibuprofen.

We just had a similar situation-- lo had a low grade fever on and off for a few days, was extra fussy and clingy, lost her appetite, pulling on ears occasionally. She is def teething and had a cold so I was hesitant to take her in (we were out of town and couldn't get to our ped too). Ended up taking her to an urgent care place and it was a double ear infection

Well take this with a grain of salt bc LO has not actually had a fever (although based on instruction from our ped fevers don't really concern me until they are 104 or higher..)... but I'm not super alarmist about illness. If Fiona was "just" grouchy with a 101 temp and a bit of ear pulling, I would probably give it until the morning and see how she seemed to be doing. I would feel like it was a cold, teething, and/or ear infection and I don't really feel like any of those things are urgent in under 24 hours. If she seemed really uncomfortable/in pain I would take her in same day though.

(Also-- sometimes babies just pull on their ears..? Maybe not Alice but Fiona has always done it a bit. Especially when she is tired or whiny. She pulls on her ears and also on her hair near her ears. We had her 9 mo appt after she started doing that and her ears were fine. Kids are weird...)

I usually take her if the fever doesn't respond to Motrin/Tylenol. Like Anagram, our daycare has a 24-hour fever-free policy.

Honestly, I almost always take her in. She can't go back to daycare until she's 24 hours fever free, and I was burned once by a 3 day fever than I thought was a virus that ended up being an ear infection. My husband and I had to take of 5 consecutive sick days between us, and that sucked.

So now, I take her to the doctor immediately. I only pay a $10 copay, so I don't mind at all.

@mrs.shinerbock: That's a fantastic resource. I wish my ped's office would have provided something like that! Thank you!

She's never had an ear infection before and I've taken her twice in the last couple months and they said she was just teething, haha. But she didn't run a fever those times. My FIL is coming around 1 and I'm going to reevaluate then, as it will be easier to take her in if needed if someone can stay with her brother. Thanks everyone for the input!

This last time we didn't go in until day 3, turns out we were dealing with a double ear infection. I'd rather just take them in and see, rather than keep dosing with ibuprofen. My son's prone to ear infections, though.

Basically, I wait until I've questioning myself so much that I can't handle not knowing. : ) If this afternoon is bad, you could do after hours this evening if that's available in your area. If it doesn't get higher, tomorrow would probably still be okay too (if she doesn't seem worse). I've only ended up wrong once when I've taken him in and I usually feel better after if the visit is during waking hours.

@twodoghouse: we usually wait a day or two now to call ...unless their behavior is very unusual or there are other symptoms. We used to take LO 1 in sooner but they would just tell us to give Tylenol and wait it out.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: My DH and I have the same approach. Luckily, our doctor never makes us feel like we are overreacting. And about 75% of the time we've gone it's been an ear infection.

I've actually never called the ped if my kids were running a fever. I'm in the wait and see camp like @mrs.shinerbock: and I love that link from Seattle Children's. I like to keep them out of the ped's office as much as possible to avoid illness - especially during the winter and early spring months. I also prefer to give ibuprofen over Tylenol - I think it works better.

I err on the cautious side and take them in, especially if they aren't acting like themselves. Mine also are prone to ear infections and don't have many (if any) symptoms. I'm just extra cautious!

I think every ped has a different preference, but my doc is really concerned with ear infections and has us come in almost every time she has a fever that lasts more than a day. Now, she's almost 2 and I feel like we've taken a silly amount of visits to the pediatrician and she's never had an ear infection, but our doc takes the "better safe than sorry" approach, which I'm fine with.

@Smurfette: Yeah, it's definitely the cold and eat pulling that's making me think she needs to go in, not necessarily the fever on its own.

@autumnlove: Do you wait a few hours? 24? Or just see how they respond after Tylenol and play it by ear?

@Freckles: Thanks, she's never had a fever this high so I probably am first time mom-ing this a little. Good to know that this isn't a high fever and may not need meds. I'm not sure if she is in pain, necessarily, but is just very off. Extremely cranky, short fuse with her twin brother, and just wants to nurse/sleep on me. I can tell she just doesn't feel well!

I was told to only give Tylenol if they were in visible pain. 101.4 for her age isn't that high, so i'd focus on whether she still seems to be in pain or pulling her ear.

Hope she feels better soon!

When do you call the ped? Do you wait to see if the fever responds to meds first?

Alice (10.5 months) has been fighting a cold for 1.5 weeks. She seemed like she was improving (nose stopped running so badly), but the last couple days she's been extra grouchy and pulling her ear. She's cutting her 2nd tooth so I thought t could be that. She just woke up from her nap really warm. Checked her temp rectally and she's at 101.4. I gave her some Tylenol, hoping that will help, but I think I should call the ped and take her in. We are getting a new oven delivered this afternoon so it's really bad timing for a dr visit. DH thinks we should wait to see how she does with Tylenol and take her in tomorrow if she still seems off. What would you do?
