We just went through this question before Italy and bought a peapod plus off of amazon. It could easily accommodate a 5 year old. It's super roomy, super light (2-3 lbs), and dd loved it! We are super fans.

@SweetiePie: Blake's been in a toddler bed for about 6 weeks now, and he still sleeps in a pack n play when we travel. Alice just switched to a toddler bed last night and we will be away from home tomorrow night. I'm hoping she'll be fine with the pack n play, too. Otherwise I'm just going to put their PNP mattresses (we have additional 5" mattresses for them, not just the little thin ones that come with the pnp) on the floor and pray to the gods of sleep for some mercy.

We use this :

Regalo My Cot Portable Bed, Royal Blue https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H1MRJO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_AqNeybKVQ742R

Cheap, portable, functional. They also make one with a built in sleeping bag but we just use a blanket (borrowed from the destination) and bring his pillow from home!

@SweetiePie: we did this recently. We had overnight guests and DD wasn't feeling well so we put her in our room in our Bjorn travel crib. She slept in it just fine for 2 nights despite the fact that she has been in her big girl bed/crib without rails since April. I personally wouldn't buy a new travel bed at this age, but I'm glad she willing went into the Bjorn.

DD has a floor bed at home so she doesn't really like to sleep on a "big tall bed" unless she can be up against a wall. We get a cot for her or put a mattress on the ground when we travel. I'm kinda thinking that we will get her a sleeping bag with a pillow on it for Christmas so we can stick it in her suitcase.

I'm going back and forth on this issue for Christmas travel. MIL has one PNP at her house, but the baby needs one too. So I either need to drag one with us from CA or Sam will have to sleep on some alternate surface. There's a bed in the guest room but I'm not sure if he's ready for it or not.

Someone I talked to highly recommended this bed:

https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Kidz-Travel-Hand-Pump/dp/B0085YGTGW

It comes up the sides so its kinda contained, uses standard crib mattresses, etc. But it comes with a hand pump, with ANGTFD. We own one of these and use it for EVERYTHING and it folds flat for travel:

https://www.amazon.com/Intex-Bellows-Foot-Pump-11-5/dp/B001ANYRGE/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1477593131&sr=8-1&keywords=intex+foot+pump

@SweetiePie: DS is 2.5 and has been in a regular bed for a year, but when we travel he's still been in a packnplay until just recently. We either do packnplays, bed, or mat in the floor. He doesn't seem to care.

@SweetiePie: when we first tried putting lo in a bed, it was because she was tantrumming about using the travel crib. I actually think it's partly bc mil keeps her house FREEZING cold with a/c in the summer, and the bed had more blankets than the travel crib next to it, but lo was NOT into the bed. and at that stage, she was still sleeping in the crib at home too!

Sorry on phone so hard to reply to everyone. I guess what I'm wondering is...COULD I still do a pack n play? Or once they are in a bed (really it's his crib with a toddler rail) are they opposed to any type of confinement?
Has anyone tried a PNP after switching to bed at home? Was there resistance?

He's a super easy going sleeper otherwise. He doesn't care what he's sleeping in or where as long as its dark and there's a sound machine. Sleep has never been disrupted due to travel.

A bed, if we were in a hotel, we'd get a room with two queen beds. If we were in a house, we'd need at least 3 sleeping spaces, so we sometimes have to use air mattresses.

She has always slept in a regular bed since switching to her big girl bed at home. Once at my parents' house she slept on an old crib mattress on the floor which she really liked- and ironically was the second time ever she fell out of bed.

It's harder if there aren't enough Beds though.

Since about 24 months, lo just sleeps in a bed when we travel. We've only stayed with family or at air bnbs since then, but the beds are pretty low to the ground/she can climb in and out. She's only fallen out once out of about 3 weeks combined, and when she did she wasn't hurt, just startled, and was able to fall back asleep quickly after. We made sure to keep pillows around her after that!

ETA seeing other replies, we might have to look into Shrunks! For thanksgiving we're going to be staying in my mom's 1-bedroom condo for 10 days and were trying to think of what to do for her bed...!

Currently when we travel (whether to visit family or in a hotel) we use a pack n play or our Lotus travel crib.
He's still in a crib now but there's a strong possibility he'll be in the converted toddler bed by Christmas when we will be traveling (for family and for our own vacations).
Do they still sleep in a pack n play type thing when they're done with the crib? Or do I have to get one of those shrunks beds or something?
