i would try with Lo#2 as it seems like she is ready! it might help motivate big sis as well. it kind of sounds like lo#1 might have encopresis. a big sign of that is the leaking poop. i recommend the book the ins and outs of poop if you haven't read it already. its a short read but really informative! basically it sounds like shes holding her poop so much she can't tell when she has to poop and it just basically leaks. it also will affect her ability to pee. just a suggestion!

eta - mr. bee wrote a good post on the ins and outs of poop and functional constipation!

I think we *could* potty train my 2 year old right now- though she doesn't have as many readiness signs as your daughter- by I'm not ready. I'm just too tired and we have a new baby coming any day now and I just can't. It might be a little selfish but you have to do what's best for your whole family.

I hope when do do go for it they both improve!

@ShootingStar: Thanks! I'm hoping so! She has a tendency to be quite jealous, especially of her baby sister, so it could backfire, but I'm hoping for the opposite!

@Adira: I've talked to the health visitor and they don't start getting concerned until age four. To be honest, I'm a bit reluctant to push it further as I don't want her to go through invasive testing of any kind without all other options, including time, having been exhausted first. Her diet is incredibly high in fibre as we had major constipation issues around 1 yr old, and we discovered she needs high amounts of fibre. As for the pants, she's just stubborn and refuses to try. She currently has a very low threshold for frustration and whilst I'm trying to encourage it, when we're in a hurry in the morning to get out the door, I just do it for her :-/

@hilsy85: Ha, yes! I am dreading the flight back on my own with my spirited, tantrum prone toddler, especially as it's an overnight flight. Ugh. As for bottomless we haven't tried it in a while as we have new carpet and I am reticent to run the risk of getting poo on it.

@pwnstar: This will be our last resort - I'm of the view that it's a mental block, not a physiological problem, so we're giving it a bit more time (with the endorsement of the health visitor) before we do any medical explorations....

@blackbird: That's a great idea for how to phrase it so as not to make her feel bad! To be honest, I might try it whilst we're gone over the holidays. We'll be at my parents house in the States for three weeks and maybe a change of scenery will help her sort this out....

It sounds like if your LO is ready, it would be easier to do it sooner than later. With your first LO, i'd try a pantless weekend at home and see how she does. It sounds like she might be trying to hold it in. I don't think DD1 would be so affected if you just phrase it like "everybody uses the toilet now! mommy does! daddy does! Sister does!" and leave out the "little/younger" emphasis.

Honestly, I would get DD1 checked out (probably a pediatric gastroenterologist/ proctologist). There may be a physiological/ anatomical reason why she leaks poop on an ongoing basis.

No advice other than I would probably wait til after traveling! You will have enough to deal with just with the flights!\

ETA that I agree DD1 should be able to take loose pants on and off by herself...have you tried just having her be bottomless at home?

Well, I wouldn't potty train now with a huge trip coming up, but maybe when you get back, it would make sense to. It certainly sounds like your younger daughter is ready.

With regards to your older daughter, have you talked to her pediatrician about the poop situation at all? Maybe she needs a dietary change to help with the fact she's doing little poops all day long? Do you think she really can't take her pants on and off by herself, or is she stubborn? 3.5 seems old enough that she should be able to do that on her own. If not, I guess you need to practice it with her more? As for wiping herself, it's normal that she can't do it well at this age.

I have no advice/experience, as DS is just now showing signs of potty readiness. But just a thought - maybe your older DD will be more motivated by seeing her younger sister using the potty better than her?

DD2 is 22 months old and she is so ready for potty training, and has been for at least a couple of months now! She tells me when she's doing a poo, she asks to sit on the potty, she is forever taking off her nappy and putting big sister's big girl underwear on, her favourite books are the potty books, she has all the right terminology for potty training, and she can take off her pants on her own and put them back on with ease.

So basically every sign is out there saying 'I'm ready!!!' Our hesitation comes from the issues we've had and are still having with our nearly 3.5 yr old DD. She has been pee trained for a while now and is pretty good about it, but generally won't tell us when she has to pee, it's up to us to take her to the toilet and she will occasionally just pee in her pants if it has been too long between bathroom visits (she usually can hold it for four hours or so, but much beyond that and she has an accident). Poo is a whole different story. She doesn't do big poos once or twice a day, instead there are just tiny little poos that seem to leak out throughout the day. She sometimes seems to know when she's doing a poo, but most of the time, I think she has no idea, and these little poos just leak out throughout the day, meaning her pants are dirty all the time. When she's not tired or not at home, she tends to do better, but in general, her pants are dirty far more often than they're not. I seriously spend a ridiculous part of my day cleaning poo out of underwear (be jealous, be very jealous).

So aside from the poo issues, DD1 is no where near being night trained (she is never dry in the morning or after naps), and still requires major assistance with every trip to the toilet. Not only does she have to be prompted (she seriously hardly ever instigates a trip to the bathroom), but she can't get her pants on and off by herself, nor can she clean herself. With the poo issue, there is always a fair amount to clean and whilst she does try it on occasion, it just results in getting poo absolutely everywhere.

So with all these issues with DD1, I am struggling to psych myself up to potty train DD2 right now. We'll also be flying internationally over the holidays, including me flying back 8 hrs on my own with the two girls whilst 4 months pregnant - I don't know if I can stomach two recently sort of potty trained little ones on the flight! Also, I wonder if there's any point in doing it now when we're going to be travelling and having everything thrown off for a few weeks...

Anyway, any brilliant words of advice? Anyone been in a similar situation? Oh, the other thing is that DH is concerned about it negatively affecting DD1 if her little sister is potty trained before her, but I don't think that's that good of a reason to hold off....
