In college, I became friends with a group of people who liked all sorts of ethnic foods that I had never tried and initially didn't really like. Over time, I kept going out with them and I ended up really loving many different types of foods. I did find that I had to eat certain foods several times (like sushi or thai food) before really developing a taste for it. Now I'm pretty adventurous with food.

My parents always just fed my brother and me whatever they ate. There were no "kids meals" at our house or when going out to restaurants. So no fish sticks or chicken nuggets or anything like that. At home we ate mostly Russian food but we went out to eat a lot because my dad really likes all sorts of ethnic foods. So we were exposed to different types of foods from an early age.

Growing up we pretty much ate Korean, Japanese, and American food. It wasn't until I was in my 20's and started going out to more restaurants that I really broadened my palate. That's when I started eating fish, oysters, and all kinds of ethnic food (I love Ethiopian food).

Charlie and Olive pretty much eat American, Korean, and Japanese too. I hope to introduce them to a much broader palate as they get older.

How and when did you really broaden your palate?
