DD was 19 months old when DD2 was born. She didn't meet her little sister until we came home from the hospital....four hours after she was born! We left for the hospital at 4:00 am and were back in our own home before 2:00 pm that same day. Worked out perfectly. :-)

DS was only 15 months old when his baby sister was born, but I still wanted him to be the first to meet her. I had a scheduled c-section, so he stayed with my mom the night before. We texted her when we were on our way to the recovery room and she brought him to the hospital. When she got their, she called my husband, he went out to get G and bright him in the room. He wanted nothing to do with her lol he just wanted to run around. But it was still important to me to have him be the first. My mom took him back home. He came up to visit with whatever grandparent he was with that day/time(because of work schedules he had to be traded a few times) and would go home with them. He had no problem with it.

I would imagine your LO will be fine leaving. Mine never seemed to care. But, what do YOU want? Toddlers and a hospital room are hard! You might want to wait until you feel up for it, because just as busy as they are at home, that curiosity spikes in a hospital with gross crevasses of the room that haven't been cleaned in ages.
When my second was born we waited until I didn't have any IV's because I didn't want to worry her. I also wanted to be sitting and able to walk (I had a csection).
With my third, they met him later that day, it ended being ok, but not ideal. The IV didn't upset them, but I couldn't get out of bed yet and help wrangle. Plus DS#1 didn't get why he could crawl on me.

In the hospital and it was perfect! They gave him a special "big brother" badge. After he met the baby we let him watch a little Kung Fu Panda on TV which he loved and then my husband took him home (husband came back later without him to stay.) he was fine going home.

My son was 28 months, so a bit older. We went with option 2 because I knew it would probably be hard for him to leave without me. It went really well!

LO#1 was 16 months old when LO#2 was born. His grandparents brought him to the hospital to see us and meet the baby the morning he was born! He was so sweet and interested in the baby :) I don't remember him having trouble leaving afterwards! I was discharged from the hospital a few hours later, so we just went home (around 10 hrs after birth give or take?).

My mom brought DD1 to the hospital a couple hours after DD2 was born. She just climbed right up onto the bed with me and the baby and hugged and kissed her. She stayed on the bed with us the whole time! (19 months) :) It was a perfect moment. My mom snapped some pics of us all as a family and then she got some time to meet the baby, too.
DD1 hung out for an hour or so, and then my mom took her back home.

My mom bought DS to the hospital on the 1st day in the afternoon. DH held him while my sister held the baby and introduced them. He was enamored from the 1st minute! DS was 20 months old. He came to visit every day. My mom watches him while I work so he is very comfortable with her.

My oldest son was 8.5 months old and he came to the hospital the day after my twins were born. His grandparents brought him and then took him back home after awhile.

my boys were 2 when my daughter was born and they also came the next day. Lilly was born in the morning so they could have seen me that day but I was having some issues that kept me hooked up to a bunch of wires and stuff so we waiting until I could take the IV and catheter out that way there wasn't a bunch of tube hooked up to me when they came in.

DS was 17 months too. He just walked in the room, I was in the hospital bed with dd and he was like "baby! Baby!" and I pulled him in the bed with us and we have really precious pics of him patting the baby and us all chilling in the bed!

I loved having him at the hospital! I would be so sad not to see him for so long.

@Bao: Was she fine with leaving? I love the idea of him being the first one to meet him after DH and I, but like @locavore_mama: mentioned, I guess I'm a little worried he won't do well leaving the hospital without us while his brother stays.

We are planning on having LO (she will be 28 months) be the first one to meet dd2 after daddy.
That's a good point about her having to leave the hospital with grandparents while daddy and mommy stay with new baby though. I think because you're LO is younger he will be OK as long as he's distracted?

I'm almost at the halfway point of this pregnancy, and DH and I have been trying to decide how we would like to introduce L to his little brother. He will only be 17 months old, so too young to really understand very much about the whole thing, but I just want to get the logistics figured out. I'm basically seeing three options here:

1. Have whichever set of grandparents he ends up staying with bring him to the hospital once the birth is over, so he would get to see us and little brother but would have to leave with the grandparents.

2. Have the grandparents bring him at the end of the hospital stay, so he will have to wait longer before seeing us and his new brother, but he would get to come home with us.

3. Not have him come to the hospital at all, just wait until we come home.

What did you do? How did it work out?
