@winniebee: very helpful, thanks! i hear you on the boredom/tired part. i get antsy because his awake time is so short (usually around 1 hour), and i get stressed out when he takes almost the entire time, or more, finishing that damn bottle!

@winniebee: That is exactly why I switched. LO would finish 2 of her 3 day bottles, but would always leave 1oz+ in one of the bottles (sometimes more). I assumed it was because she didn't want to finish out of boredom. And with her being in the 27th percentile for weight, I wanted to make sure she was getting every last drop (as often as possible!).

@edelweiss: I switched b/c it would sometimes take 30-40 minutes for him to finish a 4 oz bottle and he would just get bored/tired and give up! It took a few weeks to get totally used to it (still gave him slow flow in middle of the night until he was adjusted).

I switched to medium flow nipple (Tippee Tommie's) at around 4 months due to us putting rice in her formula, we have stuck with them. SHe is formula fed not breastfed.

LO takes one bottle a day and it almost always takes him longer to eat from a bottle than nursing ! We use the playtex ventaire bottles with a slow flow nipple. He HATED the medela nipples!

If lo is "drowning" it's def too fast. Since lo is never frustrating and just eats differently at diff times of the day, I think you should stick to level 1. He will let you know when he wants to switch!

@winniebee: thanks for sharing! what prompted the switch? did your LO need some "practice" before being comfortable with the medium flow?

Switched to the medium flow playtex around 4 months - he is exclusively bottle fed. At 10 months, still on the medium flow and don't have any plans to change to faster.

8mo and we still use the playtex slow flow.

The advice I was given by LC's is that if baby is not frustrated with the bottle, regardless of how long it takes them, to stay with the slowest flow.

@edelweiss: It took a couple of tries! We used Dr. Brown's and Mam bottles if that helps you!

I also had the same advice as mediagirl - 8 months and we are starting to move to sippy cups but bottles are Avent 1. It should take at least as long to eat a bottle as it does to breastfeed. Stop frequently for your afternoon sessions if need be to "burp" and distract.

@mediagirl: @kiddosc: thanks, that's good to know that it's okay to keep him on the slow nipple if i want and it's okay with him.

@autumnlove: thanks for the input! did your LO do fine with the faster flow right away or did it take a few tries?

I was given the same advice as mediagirl. At 10 months E is still on the lowest flow nipple as well. Sometimes he's just a lazy eater and it takes him a while, sometimes he can gulp a bottle down.

The advice I was given when I started M on the bottle was to stick with the lowest flow nipple, forever if you want to continue breastfeeding. What I was told is that if you go with a faster flow nipple, they'll expect the milk to come out of the breast just as fast and may make them want to wean off the breast.

At 9 months, my lo is still on the lowest flow nipple!

My 8-week old is currently breast and bottle fed. Sometimes, particularly in the evenings (around 6pm or later), it takes him a really long time to finish a bottle. He is currently on the slowest flow nipple (Philips Avent level 1). It can take 40 minutes or more for him to finish 4 oz (although in the afternoons it can take as short as 20 minutes). Also, sometimes I think he sucks hard enough that he's collapsing the nipple. So I thought I would try a faster flow (level 2), but I felt like he was drowning and had to pull out the bottle after every 2 sucks.

He doesn't seem unhappy about the Level 1 nipple. Should I just let it be? Did it take a few tries to transition your baby to a faster flow nipple? When could you tell that it was time to transition?

Thanks in advance! Never thought I'd be using the word "nipple" so much in an internet post.
