most kids were potty trained before 1 1/2 in Korea because they handwashed cloth diapers in my generation. I was potty trained at 14 months when my brother was born because my mom said there was no way in the world she was going to wash cloth diapers for 2! but i think these days it's the same in korea as it is in the states around 2.

6 months.

Friends of ours sort of stumbled accidentally into EC by playfully holding their baby over a kiddy toilet and she started pooping in there every single time. .... Yeah. I guess that doesn't count as toilet trained but I'm still amazed.

They encourage potty training at LO's school (like, hardcore training) at 15 months. We started EC around 6 months, and at 24 months, she's day trained. Early, sure ... But it's taken forrreeevvvveeerrrrr. :)

Someone I know said her daughter just choose to go on the potty at 18 months and that was that. I believe her too - she definitely wasn't bragging about it and seemed surprised herself!

Edited to add that at our daughter's 18 month appointment the doctor suggested starting to put her on the potty as some kids start expressing interest. Ours doesn't! 😉

Yes I heard of as early as 6mo thru elimination communication.. We tried it a little with my son but had to stop for "health" reasons (it's complicated).

My parents' generation allll say we were all potty trained after turning 1, and for sure before 2.

We kind of started experimenting/training again starting.... Gosh I don't know. Maybe 18 mo? But we didn't get serious about it til he was 20-21 mo? Now at 22 mo he is potty trained but not for naps and night time. But honestly as pp mentioned its him being trained but it's the parents right.. I gotta remember to remind him and ask him and take him every hour when we are out.

She's not too young!

DD was potty trained at 15 months. We did elimination communication when she was a baby then 3 day potty training at 15 months. She was day and night trained.

My mom claims I was a year old when i was trained. Also, I used to work at a Montessori school and a daycare and I knew several kids who were potty trained by the time they aged into my (toddler) room, so before 18 months.

WE tried a few times starting at 18 months, but she quickly lost interest, so I decided not to push her. Probably had something to do with our move. She was fully trained just after 3.5. Still the occasional accidents though....

I think kids are developmentally ready very early, it's just a longer process! I know there are places where everyone starts training well before one.

We started training DS at six months, and by 18 months he was out of diapers. My mom thought that was late :bummed: He's still in diapers at night at three, but that runs in the family so I don't think early training was to blame... I started training his little sister at 5 months because she's an earlier sitter, and she's definitely enjoying having another option besides diapers. I still often can't tell when she needs to go, but we'll get there when she's ready.

I totally got on board with elimination communication because I knew what they did in third world countries and China before LO was born. Unlike a pp mentioned, LO has had no bed wetting issues or nighttime wetting. She first went on the potty at four months. She was rarely going on the potty more than twice a day until around a year and still had some short setback periods until two. We had a few accidents, less than I can count one hand, in third and fourth year.

ETA- she had BM in the potty or toilet from under a year too.

So she finished a pooped and pee on the potty just now! 😮
Completely uninitiated by us. Daddy said he had to go and she screamed no and pointed to herself. He thought she was kidding so went to the potty. But she was still whining To go on the potty. He put her on and noticed she had just poop. She finished the poop and then peed!

Pretty crazy. Definitely not going to push and will just follow her lead.

@BrandNewMom: wow. That's intense. DD2 is the youngest in her room right now at 17 months. There is a potty in their room because they do help if parents feel that they're ready. And there are definitely kids that are going!

Our son potty trained early. I'm definitely not an expert, because we sort of "winged it", but i think it worked out well and was fairly easy.

When he showed interest around 17-18 months we just left a baby potty out and accessible to him, and he would sit on it when he wanted, we might have put him on it maybe a couple times after a meal or before bedtime. Pretty quickly he started actually using it each time he sat down, we switched from diapers to pull ups during the day. We would give him a jellybean or M&M each time he actually used the potty. We didn't push it or do a "three day method", but he would prefer the potty pretty consistently over the next month or two. He was in undies by 20-21 months after consistently keeping his pull up dry all day long for a couple of weeks. He only had one accident after that, maybe a couple of pee spots on his undies if we couldn't get him to a bathroom in time. He just turned three and is still in diapers at night, but those are dry about 50% of the time, and he is starting to announce when his diaper is dry in the morning so i think that will probably switch soon too. We have actually been fairly laid back about the whole process, so to me it was very easy.

Now my daughter just turned 17 months and is completely uninterested in the potty so I think we will probably have to do some type of a traditional potty training for her.

I do think those three day methods are probably a little rough for early potty training.

My DD showed a lot of interest at 18 months in potty training. Even after several successful attempts we never really pushed its and she lots interest. We struggled from age 2-2.5 to get her potty trained because I do think we somewhat missed the window. But I wasn't ready and daycare wasn't ready.

Ugh - my husband at 10 months (insert eye roll). I contend that his mother was trained, not him, but I suppose what's the difference. She was training his sister and decided to just do it at the same time. (he walked at 9 months, my little prodigy)

T is showing a lot of interest in the potty. He is telling us when he "poo-poos" (says poo poo and grabs his butt, lucky us!) and if we set him on the potty he pees. I'm probably missing my window or whatever, but I don't think he's developmentally ready.
