I am so glad for this thread. My grandmother has actually already snapped at me that "she will come mind the poor thing" if I try to leave the house with her. Uhhh..what the hell? I don't think so. I'm not going onto a freakin' subway..just might want to get out of the house for a few.

@erwoo: can you tell my why being Asian made it so you couldn't go out the first 30 days? Don't mean to sound naive, just not familiar with the cultural customs!

@mrs.sunglasses: we did the same as you, stopped at the grocery store on the way home from the hospital when DD was a little less than 2 days old (out of necessity since there are some things that DH refuses to buy and I wasn't exactly prepared for the after birth experience). I think our next trip out was when she went for her first doctor appt at 7 days old.

With DD, we stopped by the store on the way home and then went out to breakfast when she was a week old. With DS, we went bowling when he was 5 days old.

Lol, obviously we don't believe in staying home!

I took LO to BRU when she was 3 days old, to the grocery store when she was 5 days old, and church when she was 6 days old!

I just make sure she is either in my arms, in a carrier, or in her seat with a blanket covering her. People usually respect our privacy and don't come too close or try to touch her. I would go crazy if I didn't go out with her often!

We took LO out from the start, and no one has ever tried to actually touch her, even though they fawn over her and say how beautiful she is! lol ;p we always take her in her carrier and she usually has a A&A blanket over the carrier to protect her from the sun. (knock on wood) she's very good when we go out to eat, and pretty much always just falls fast asleep.

My mom wouldnt let me take my lo out until she was 4 wks old and that felt like an eternity. We took her to five guys :) Started out taking her with me to lunch and short errands.

Being Asian, I was not suppose to go out for the first 30-days after giving birth among other things. I guess that also meant that my baby couldn't either. We did go out but only for doctors appointments only. I believe a newborn's immune system starts to build at 6 weeks. So my recommendation is to just be careful and not let anyone touch your baby's hands. That's what I did. Every time he sleeps in his car seat I just cover him up with a blanket. My second is 4 months now and I'm still really careful when we take him out. I hang a small hand sanitizer on my purse and use it liberally when I'm out. I think it helps. :)

So what is the earliest you would take your LO out? I have a friend who has the same pedi I will have, and she recommends not taking the baby out until 6-8 weeks. I am already like, oh my gosh...I will go crazy.

I always went out!! When DS was 11 days old we went to church for the first time. I actually took advantage of going out with him while he was that little because he would sleep the whole time. I had him in the moby the whole time! DH and I went out for a date and it was like not even having a baby because he slept the whole time!

Being in the moby, no one ever tried to touch him :)

We went everywhere from the start (went out for breakfast the first time at a week and went everywhere after that). I don't do well being a shut-in. So far at 7 months we haven't seen any ill effects from being out and about.

Sometimes I would throw an A&A muslin blanket over the car seat when it got crowded to keep people from touching him or getting too close.

When LO was a week old we took him to the farmers market in a carrier. It was great to get out! The next day we took him to Costco and trader joes (but also had him in a carrier). I think as long as it is warm out and you don't let strangers touch him it's fine.

I scared myself by reading something online about RSV...but at the same time, I'm getting really bored when my husband takes the older ones out all day. Of course, I'm grateful for a few hours alone with the baby but when it's from 10am-7pm on a weekend..I get really antsy.
Is it too much to go out with them if a newborn is less than a month old?
