@MrsCB: Well now you know! next time before you throw out a bag of food, try contacting a local rescue! They are really easy to find too. I just googled it with my city and I found a list that even included email addresses!

That's so cool! I've had to switch my dogs food a few times due to allergies and always end up throwing away perfectly good food.

**Update**

Found a local foster family that is happy to take the food!

The thing was that it was large breed puppy food, and we found someone that is fostering a 3 month old pit bull :-) A local rescue set me up with this family :-)

Now I get to drop off the puppy food sometime soon and help someone out. It just warms my heart that I'm able to help someone out!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

Great ideas! I just sent out a mass email to other small local shelters/rescues in my area. I hope I get a response back!

If anything I will post it on CL, you just never know the kind of people you are dealing with on there....you know?

Could you donate it to an animal shelter or rescue? Rescue usually have more leniency with their regulations.
I had a cat on a specialized low-crystal diet that passed away before he could eat it and my local shelter was happy to take his unused food.

That's too bad the Humane Society ca't take it! Do you have a local facebook group where people buy/swap items? Maybe someone on there would want it?

Have you tried posting it on CL? It can be surprisingly difficult to give away perfectly good dog food! I once had 2 unopened bags of very good dog food that I had to throw out because I couldn't find anyone to take them.

ETA: And that's why I buy small bags when switching until I know for sure that a food is a keeper.

A rescue might be able to take it, or a foster home for dogs waiting to be adopted! DH and I foster and we can take opened food in situations like yours, so that might be your best bet.

So we tried switching our puppy's dog food to Blue Buffalo, (we did it very very slowly) but right away he had severe diarrhea and we called the vet and they said it might be just the food not reacting well to his body. It's a very very rich food!

Well we bought a 30 lb bag of this food!! It's opened and in an air tight plastic container. I tried contacting out local Humane Society, but they can't take it because the bag is opened.

Any other ideas of what I should do with it??

It would break my heart to throw out all of this perfectly good food! Plus its pretty high quality (the bag was $60!!)

I'm not looking to get money back from it, I just don't want it to be wasted.

Any ideas?
