@T.H.O.U.: yep! Go see what you like the look and feel of. You'll have to ask them about shedding, but it shouldn't be an issue-- I wouldn't worry about it with my own littles

@erinpye: So it really is as simple as kinda going to the store and seeing what looks/feels good? We have several local stores that we have had good experiences with.

What about shedding? I have a crawler and don't want an choking hazards!

@T.H.O.U.: I personally like frieze for houses with kids-- and nylon is great! Plush is also great for bedrooms because they have less traffic than rooms like living rooms. For your bedroom, go with what you like the look of!

@erinpye: @regberadaisy: Thanks for the tips on this! We are replacing our bedroom carpet here soon too (2 kids). I read to keep away from the loop. A lot of sites recommend the nylon material? Or is there a better material? Also if not a loop type, the frieze is best?

I need like a decision process flow diagram!

@MrsBrewer: TBH every time DH has had a customer coming in Saying "oh HD Lowe's gave me a better price" he has let them go back. Because almost every time they come back after they get a final installed cost that he is way cheaper. So no, I don't think a small retailer will necessarily be more expensive than big box.

A good makes all the difference in the world! Not just for odors and stains which is so important with pets. We have a dog. But it makes it much more comfortable too! We have a memory foam pad and it's soo soft. I need to double check with DH but I think our carpet is the smart strand. We've been here for two years with a toddler and dog and it's done wonderful.

@erinpye: good to know! Thank you for all of your help! :-) We were hoping to wait to get carpet until spring, but our wonderful little pup (who really isn't a puppy anymore) decided that she wanted to pull up our carpeting and chew it instead. For her defense, the carpet was pulling up a ton in the corner, and I'm sure when she was playing/wrestling with our other dog they kicked it up.

@erinpye: I know that I should expect to pay more going to a retailer vs. Home Depot for example, but (clearly I haven't priced anything out yet) how much more percentage wise, do you think I should expect? I mean should I expect double?

@MrsBrewer: the cheaper pads will absorb spills and it will continue to wick back up into your carpet no matter how many times you clean it. It can also mold, and offers less support underneath. The rubber pad won't absorb stains and won't mold.

@regberadaisy: @erinpye: Thanks for some insider tips!! :-) That's so great to know!

How come the pad is so important? Does it just offer more cushion?

Also, I wanted to add that the carpet we have right now is the loop style, and it's horrible for us with pets for sure! You are so right about pulling one end, and it all unraveling! that's how our living room looks right now!

DH is in flooring so everything we have is at cost.

And I couldn't agree with @erinpye: more regarding home Depot and Lowe's pricing. Also a lot of their products, they changed the name so you can't price shop. But go to any reputable retailer and they can usually give you a comparable product.

Definitely shop around and barter! Ask for free pad upgrades and / or no tax. DH does that all the time for customers.

My family owns a flooring biz. Don't do a Berber loop if you have pets- they pull one loop, and the entire thread comes up, leaving a line across your floor. Berber is actually a color fleck pattern, not a carpet style, but not a lot of people know that and use the word to describe the loop style. I would recommend a frieze with some varying colors, and spend the money for the most expensive rubber pad- it's worth it with kids and pets and will make your carpet last much, much longer. Pad is HUGELY marked up, so if you go to a place that exclusively sells flooring, try to get them to give you an upgrade- the best pad for the price of the medium pad. Lots of places will deal with you and throw in a pad upgrade. Also, places like Lowe's and Home Depot may seem less expensive with their $99 installs and other deals, but they raise the prices of the carpet to cover the cost, so shop around. For carpet types, I like Stainmaster, and I like Smartstrand by Mohawk. Shaw products are good, too. I've heard Home Depot's own carpet line isn't great durability-wise.

We did Luna and it was super easy and fast. They sent a guy to our house with big books of samples, then we scheduled the installation and they were in and out in like, 20 minutes (we got our basement family room done). To be honest, I don't remember exactly how affordable it was, because our insurance paid for it (a pipe burst and flooded our basement!) but I don't remember it being expensive.

ETA: we chose a berber (loop style, editing again because I wasn't clear  ) carpet because I think they look better, you don't get those vacuum lines and stains aren't as obvious. It's a light, multi-colored tan/beige color, it looks nice. It still looks brand new 4+ years later.

We are in the market for new carpet! But we have 2 big dogs, and a LO on the way! So I would love to keep expenses to a minimum! I don't want anything fancy, just something that will hide stains well, and wear well so it's nice a durable!

Where did you find a good deal on carpet?

Also, what colors are best do you think? Right now we have an awful dark blue multicolor carpet, so anything is a step up! :-)
