My dad grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. </p> <p>My dad went to college at the University of Utah in Salt Lake, after deciding as a youngster on a family roadtrip out west that he had to live somewhere with mountains when he was big.</p> <p>They met working at the same TV station in Madison, WI. They didn't leave until my dad was transferred to Oklahoma for work -- he worked for a major airline. He was the first person in his family to go to college (the best college in Taiwan!!), and then the only person in his fam to immigrate to the US, get a PhD and eventually an MD. He is a smart man!</p> <p>My mom grew up to a well-off family in the "big city" of Taipei. I think that happens a lot in Japan, where the parent with custody will cut off all communication with the other parent. He also happened to be Korean but born in Japan (in my mom's generation, that was not a good thing). My dad went off to Brazil and lived there for 10 years. He met a professor from the States in Brazil, and my dad followed him back to Delaware of all places. Her family moved to Gotemba, Japan (small town at the base if Mt Fuji) when she was still very young. My real dad is from a small town in Kyushu (southern island of Japan). They divorced and my mom remarried an American ( my stepdad) and we moved to Wisconsin, where he is from. My dad grew up in Colorado. They met in Japan when he was teaching at an international school Mom was a secretary at the same school. They moved to Colorado in the late '70s. He was born in South Carolina but he said his favorite places were Japan and Germany. There's a Keio Department Store there too, and we also have a small concession there developing photos. I lived there for a very short while, and worked at the camera store (pro tip: developing pictures is harder than it looks!).
