It was super cheap at Target and it takes regular trash bags. I actually dump solid poops in the toilet, but I only have to empty it once a week, and it doesn't smell in between (we also use cloth at least 50% of the time, so that helps). It contains the smell really well. The only downside is the price of the special bags. We've tried the target brand and find that they don't work well, and we end up wasting most of the bag, causing us to buy more. My SIL warned me not to switch away from the genie. She said they thought it was a waste of money so they tried a regular garbage and ended up going back to the genie because the smell was awful. We empty the genie a few times a week so that probably helps but I find it goes a great job of containing any odors. We only put pee diapers in it and take it out every 3 days, so it doesn't really stink. We keep a roll of dog poop bags at the changing table, and put all poop diapers into the poop bags, and leave those in a small trash can by our back door, which we take out frequently. This works better now that LO only poops 1 - 2x a day, max. I know as a newborn, he was pooping ALL the time, so this wouldn't have worked as well back then! She was formula fed and her poos were stinky! By the time she was on solids &amp; in size 3 diapers, we were going through diaper pair refills so often that it wasn't even worth it and started throwing diapers in our kitchen trash can. </p> <p>We hung on to the genie &amp; decided to reuse it for our second. She's breastfed &amp; her poos don't smell (and she goes frequently!!). She's also on solids, but her poos don't seem to smell - I'm wondering if that has anything to do with her being BFed. </p> <p>Anyway - we moved the diaper genie to make room for our Xmas tree and never brought it back in from the garage. Also, when our toddler poops, we empty the poop into the toilet, and then wrap up &amp; throw away the (now empty) diaper. Sure, it isn't "necessary" but I like it. It definitely contains the stink for us. I keep an eye out and have bought all our refills on sale or on Amazon warehouse or at Costco (we stock up when there's a good deal) so I really don't feel like they were terribly expensive! </p>
