We co-bed with our almost 10 month old son. We have his crib mattress on the floor at the foot of our bed that he naps on and starts the night on. He does pretty good with staying on it, but has crawled off a few times. We made sure our bedroom is baby proofed and we keep an eye on him with a camera. One time though he did crawl off and we looked down at the monitor to see him not in his bed! I ran into the bedroom and he was sitting on the floor looking around. lol

We coslept, and still do, so my son napped on his futon or in his bed.

I had the futon pushed up against the wall, with a bed rail at the foot. Now we have a full sized bed with a tall headboard and two rails on each side.

@LizSmith: That's a really good question, but it's one that we sidestepped by always putting them to sleep. Ellie didn't start falling asleep on her own until she was five, and by then she had been out of napping for a long time! Here is some basic info: http://mariamontessori.com/mm/?p=921 And here is one with specific advice related to falling asleep independently using a floor bed: http://www.bedstart.com/questions/falling-asleep-without-momdad-in-the-room-while-using-a-floor-bed/ I am sure if you were having lots of difficulty with wandering you could try making the room more boring by removing toys when it was time to sleep.

@Mrs. Twine: With the floor napping, do you have any trouble with them not going to sleep because there's nothing stopping them from getting up? I don't really have any issues with rocking/nursing/whatever to sleep, but at some point I'll need to be able to have them fall asleep on their own (after some sort of going down routine).

I wore or held mine for naps until they were 10 months or so. Then we used a floor bed in their room for naps and to start out the night. Guard rails are okay, but once babies get mobile and can crawl, they might not prevent all accidents because some babies/toddlers will wander around in the bed some if they wake up before you can get to them. Mine never actually tried to get out of bed, but Lorelei will move/crawl all over the bed at night and I wouldn't trust her not to accidentally fall out of bed even with a rail. So the floor bed in a toddler safe room means that even if it takes me a minute to get to her if she wakes I know she will be safe. Ellie transitioned to all night by herself in her own room at age five with no pushing or intervention on our part. She was just ready to do that. Though at age six she does still like to have "family sleepovers" sometimes.

@LizSmith: I've heard of people having guard rails on the bed so LO can't roll off while napping alone. not sure where you would go about getting them though!

@Kemma: Thanks, I'll check that out. And I hadn't thought of a floor bed, though it seems pretty "duh" now that you say it. Thanks!

I know some bed-sharing families have a floor bed in the nursery for day time sleep or LO goes into some sort of crib during the day and until first waking in the night.

If your on fb you could check out the "Joy in Gentle Parenting" group, lots of like-minded, bedsharing Mama's who could have lots of great suggestions for you :-)

We plan to co-sleep (well, actually co-bed since we plan to have them in our bed) for as long as possible, which means into the toddler years if that's what makes sense. But what I'm not really clear on is where they nap in this case. When they're teeny I plan to babywear, so they'd either sleep in the wrap, or (more likely) I'll nap with them as often as possible. But once that gets impractical there's a big gap before a toddler bed or leaving them in your own bed would be safe. Part of the reason we'd like to co-sleep is to skip the cost of a crib, so having one just for naps wouldn't be great. Maybe a pack-n-play?

If you co-sleep, where does LO nap?

And wait, this isn't worth another thread but when did I get gold?! Did someone anonymously help me out? Thank you SO much to whomever is responsible!
