It’s not as expensive as it seems. Ask for referrals or start googling. I’ve had luck with Wayfair for non wood items. Our neighborhood Facebook marketplace, Goodwill, buy nothing groups - have gotten lots of good in-between things for cheap. And more eco-friendly! So possibly it’s not really any more work to paint anyway. Though I could never match the gray stain, but we could do solid gray or white. I have two half-sized hemnes dressers that were black/brown and are now lighter colours. Painted by my mother. :) Annoying when they slightly change colours. Everything has held up well with minimal abuse. I’m still not sure what I might upgrade him with, but it’s so much less pressing now that a) what he has really works well, b) can be modified with legs as he gets taller, and c) still looks as good as it did 2 years ago. I like some of the pieces Emily Henderson used in her nanny’s Sylvia home makeover. Most is from Target. So I hide like 50% of his toys at a time. I ended up getting the target version in the weathered gray color, looks really similar to the Walmart one but $15 cheaper because of the sale today. A lot of the reviews complained it arrives damaged. But this 6 cube one would be better in the space I want than the 4 or 8 ikea one. We have a couple of each. I find the ikea ones easier to build but they all seem pretty similar quality wise. Just make sure it is the threshold brand and not room essentials. The room essentials ones are smaller and more flimsy. But it’s black brown and feels too dark for a little girls permanent room. And we have a really big kallax in the play room that I’m happy with too. It just doesn’t feel worth the extra drive to ikea just for a small kallax, which is silly, really- it’s like ten extra driving minutes. @katsupgirl: I was looking at Target. I’m pretty sure we have all the same stuff as @ElbieKay ha! But I always find what I want and I never have trouble paying their prices. It’s annoying to put it together but DW is really good at assembling. Plus we can fit it in our SUV and get it right away. Our favorite line for dressers is Hemnes (because it is real, solid wood), and we have two Kallax wall units for toy storage. We also buy our cribs there, and we have Tobias chairs for our kitchen table. Our son’s loft bed is from there too, though I will admit that I would prefer to have a slightly higher quality bed for him. But it does the job. Our “real” bedroom furniture is from Room and Board. Specifically right now, I want to get a low bookcase or cubby unit for my 5 year olds room to store toys. But her current furniture is a mish mosh (gray headboard, espresso nightstand, Black-brown dresser), so until I know what direction we would ultimately go with her bedroom furniture, I really don’t want to spend a ton. Plus she’s likely to put stickers on it or scratch it or whatever. I also don’t want to go super cheap and have it warping the first time she puts toys and books on it. But eventually we will also be buying more permanent furniture so trying to figure out where to look. Prefer cheaper than PBK.
