@Pepper: I nurse wherever I am! I've nursed in the Ergo with the infant insert before. I usually wear the hip belt lower on my waist and tighten it there. Then I shift the entire carrier right or left, latch, cover him with the hood and go! Because of the infant insert, you can "flare" out the top and you can't see anything. The only time it is problematic is when E does the latch/delatch thing, because sometimes he requires a little finagling to get him re-latched. Usually he falls asleep.

The car works for me. I'm uncomfortable with people's attention in public. I have nursed In an airplane and in the er... That was probably the most public.

When A was a newborn I usually nursed in the parents room in case of a poo explosion! These days I still prefer to nurse in the parents' room mainly because it's quiet and easier to get A organised and on the boob however I have no issue feeding elsewhere if required :-)

@septemberlove: Thanks! I nursed in the car before we got out and after we got back (was there about 2.5 hours). I managed to change him in a public restroom for the first time ever, and I baby wore him in the Ergo for an hour! Getting the hang of this whole "having a baby in the real world" thing, lol.

I nurse where ever though without a cover. I've even nursed in an old mining cave (standing! that was fun).

Wherever I could find a quiet spot, a chair or bench, changing rooms were always awesome because there is room for the stroller, my bags and usually somewhere to sit. I've also used nursing rooms, at the table in restaurants and in the car. Basically wherever.

Shopping? Women's lounges (if available) or more often, in the dressing room. K hates the nursing covers anyway, so I can be topless in the privacy of a dressing room. Other than that, I've nursed in the car, in a restaurant, and in any seating areas with covers as needed.

bathrooms and in the car--i'm still not totally comfortable just sitting down somewhere with people milling around and nursing. i have to work on that! also, FWIW, because of our breastfeeding issues at the beginning, when we would go out i would bring a backup bottle of formula or pumped milk in case nursing didn't work out.

Nurse where ever you would feel most comfortable. For me, in the early days, that was dressing rooms & the car. I think a Target dressing room was the first place I nursed DS while out and about.

Dressing rooms or just on a bench. I use the pull up/push down technique with tank top I pull down and a shirt I pull up so there's minimum exposure. I don't use a cover but sometimes if there are a lot of people around, I'll throw a thin receiving blanket over LO and my breast while I latch him. He always bats it away and gets really distracted by it so I usually ditch it once he's latched and I just slide my shirt down to cover as much breast as I can without smothering LO.

We use a boppy so I always stuff it in the bottom of the stroller when we go out. It's comforting knowing I have it, it helps me turn any chair into a comfortable spot to nurse.

Your comfort and baby's comfort are the primary concerns. Nursing works best when all parties involved are at ease. For some women this means finding a private place, and for others in can be accomplished in very public places. Think about what you need to feel comfortable nursing, and do that. Some women also like to nurse while babywearing (I do!) because they don't have to be tied to one spot and it can create more privacy visually (so less "stuff" for onlookers to look at). Some moms like nursing covers. You'll have to experiment a little to see what feels best. And expect that it might change over time.

Thanks for the replies/ideas! If you nurse while baby wearing, what kind of a carrier do you use? I have an Ergo that I use with the infant insert, but I've never tried nursing in it!

My LO is 8 months. I mostly nurse him in the car since its clean and most comfortable. If I'm at the mall I go to the nicest department store, like Neiman Marcus, since they have nice lounges in the restrooms. But at the outlets, the bathrooms are usually gross so I would nurse in the car:). Have fun!

In the beginning I would just find a bench or quiet corner to sit in. A spot where I felt was a bit out of sight. Just throw on your cover grab some water and get comfy. It's nice having DH around for the first few times so you've got some help/distraction.

You'll quickly become confident and a pro! Good luck!

EDIT: forgot about nursing rooms! I think it is different for every woman and every child, each person has different comfort levels.

They might have nice bathrooms with cushy chairs you could sit in? Some stores in the mall have nice bathrooms with a lounge area like that, but not sure about the outlets. You could nurse in the car or if it is nice out you could sit on a bench outside?

This is such a FTM stupid question, but where do you prefer to nurse LO when you're out and about?

DH and I are going to the outlets today for some shopping with DS. I've never been out with him for more than an hour, so I've never needed to nurse in public. Do you just nurse LO wherever there's an open seat? Do you go to your car?

I'm nervous about this because we're still pretty new to breastfeeding, and sometimes he doesn't latch right away!
