@hilsy85: Yeah, I just looked up Streeteasy and it's NY only.

@Mrs. Bee: I second broker sites. We began with Craigslist but only saw horrible apartments. I researched neighborhoods and looked up brokers who dealt with the areas that we had narrowed down. Even though brokers' fees suck, it's worth it in the end.

Trulia and Zillow are other sites I'd recommend.

@Mrs. Bee: Same around here with the broker fee, although I don't think places usually go in a day. We just got so lucky with our current apartment that I'm spoiled (renter by owner, no fee, under market value when we moved in and he hasn't raised the rent in 3 years!). I suppose a fee isn't the end of the world if you stay a few years, which is our plan (and the fee is less around here than in NYC I think).

streeteasy.com, but pretty sure that's specific to NY area...what about NY Times real estate section online?

i browse broker sites. we've paid a broker fee for our past three apartments. alas in high demand neighborhoods, it's hard to find a nice place through just craigslist unless you get super lucky. places go in one day around here.

I know it very much depends on where you live, but when apartment hunting, where do you search online for listings? I generally just use craigslist, but I wonder if there are other websites that are better or have other listings. I browse Zillow too, since I like their map feature. We haven't moved in over 3 years and I'm dreading the whole process.

Since you all convinced me that moving pre-baby makes more sense than with a newborn, it's been on my mind, although we won't actually move until the spring anyway.
