@looch: ugh I agree re: milk with meals--it kind of grosses me out when I see adults drinking milk with a burger or sandwich!

@Beehive: we just had our 1 year appt today--our pedi said to do milk at the times when he would normally nurse/get a bottle (she said most people do it at wakeup, before each nap, and before bed), and I can do it in a bottle or sippy. She said between 16 and 20oz a day, but she didn't seem super hard core about it--said to try to get him to drink it but up his yogurt/cheese if he isn't a big fan. I think I'll offer LO some tomorrow!

Thanks everyone, this is so helpful! Great tips.

@DillonLion: We have LO's 12 month appointment in a couple weeks (late), but I got antsy over the weekend and wanted to start him on milk before the appointment.

We don't do milk at meals, my husband and I were both raised by European parents and they just don't consume milk the same way we do in the US. Plus, milk with spaghetti and tomato sauce, just doesn't go together in my book.

Anywho, my son consumed milk twice a day at 12 months, he kind of weaned himself from the afternoon milk and I was okay with it because at that time, he ate a lot of cheese and yogurt.

I looked at the list of foods on that blog above, it my son would eat anything on that list, I would gladly give it to him, but my reality is that he won't even consider that stuff, so milk it is.

@Mrs. Deer: very good point uto bring up!
The biggest nutrient that they get from milk for me is calcium. A lot of milk alternatives don't offer (much of) that. At around 12 months My lo wasn't a huge cheese fan; she loved/s yogurt but I didn't trust her to get enough calcium just from yogurt.

Though it may seem unusual, since we've dealt with mspi I've been doing a lot of digging into the benefits and necessity of dairy and I would say this: do you really need to offer milk at all?

Quick post I liked:

We've replaced the morning bottle with a sippy cup of milk. And then she gets a bottle before nap and before bed. I think next week we will eliminate before nap and save before bed for last. I imagine as time goes on she will start to have it with meals and in between meals a little more randomly rather than being on a milk schedule...

LO is 12.5 months and I usually give him a little but of milk first thing in the morning- he'll usually drink a few sips. He also drinks a little bit after each nap and he drinks a bottle of 6-8 ounces at bedtime (that's the only bottle of the day). He drinks 12-16 ounces per day....closer to 12 most days.

Totally depends.

When she was still on bottles then same time as she got bottles before. Now that she's off she gets it at meal times. It doesn't affect her meal intake.

We also do milk with meals and water throughout the day/as requested. We continued to nurse am/pm for a long time and this seemed to work well for us.

My ped said at 12 months give milk with meals and give water throughout the day. All the handouts I received said the same thing - there should be a slow transition where their calories are coming from solids not liquids. My LO definitely warmed up super slow to cow's milk but now she drinks between 12-16 oz a day. I wouldn't stress too much especially bc your LO is still nursing and also if your LO likes yogurt and cheese.

So at 12 months I started giving her a straw cup of milk (it was water and milk for awhile and I slowly increased the ratio to more milk) with all three meals and also offered her the milk cup before naptimes (before we headed upstairs). The rest of the day she had her straw cup of water to drink as much as she wanted

Starting at 12 months I always just gave my daughter cows milk at every meal and snack -- so up to 5 times per day. She drinks plenty, but not enough to go over the max amount her pedi wants her to have in a day.

M gets cows milk 3x / day and water with meals.

6:30 am - 6 oz milk
8:30 - breakfast
9 - nap
11 - 4 oz milk
1:30p - lunch
2 - nap
4:30 - 6 oz milk
6:30 - dinner
7 - bed

M's pedi said 12-20 oz per day is good (I'm no longer BF). If you're BF morning and night I really wouldn't worry much about getting a large quantity of cow's milk - especially if LO gets some other dairy in his diet.

ETA - I posted this exact question right before we transitioned to cows milk. These things always seem less complicated afterwards :)

we usually give water at meals and he gets milk usually around twice a day. He gets one sometimes early in the morning when he wakes up crying. Sometimes one right before naptime (Sometimes, mostly likely he doesn't anymore at 15 months.) or if were going out he will get a sippy cup of it in the afternoon.
for example,
today he got one at 7am (gets up to drink it and hten goes back to bed til around 9am) and then another around 5pm when we were out.

As is a common theme, I think, I'm totally confused about what to do with feeding now that LO is 12 months old. I'm still breastfeeding, but would like to move to morning+before bed only, and use whole milk for the rest of his milk (with maybe one other breastmilk bottle a day to use up the freezer stash).

So when are they supposed to have whole milk? Is it something they drink with their meals instead of water? (And if so, when do they get to have water?) Or do they keep having separate milk feedings, only now it's whole milk instead of breastmilk?

I was excited to try it out today, and gave LO some whole milk in his straw cup with his lunch and dinner. He had a few sips at lunch at most, and several sips at dinner, but definitely not the several ounces he'll need to get to 17ish oz, which is what my ped recommended.
