@PinkElephant: I would just pick something that’s not too exciting. Nothing she’ll want to get up and dance to. I think that’s why the teacher uses classical music.

@lindseykaye: @Grace: The music is a great idea. I never thought of that. Thank you! Anything in particular you suggest?

@Mama Bird: glad it’s not just my kid - the distraction thing frustrates me :silly:

@Anagram: yes, that’s my concern about her bring in her room alone. I’m sure I’d go up and find her sprawled on her bed in a dress up tutu playing with silly putty or something

We got DD a desk. She used it a lot in K, now in 1st grade and we either use the desk or dining table or their little kid table. We have a small house so even at her desk in her room I can go back and forth from the kitchen to help.

We also have homework every day, and also do it at the kitchen table. She does get distracted, but I feel like she’s be more distracted alone in her room. I send her for a simple pair of socks and it turns into a 20 minute saga of her wanted to get out every book and toy she’s ever owned.

Last year (in first grade) DS did his homework on the dining table. He had a desk but it was covered with toys, so it wasn't an option. This summer we cleaned it and so far, he does homework at his desk and makes a big deal of keeping it clean. He still gets distracted a ton, but he'd be distracted anywhere - he can't walk past a book without picking it up. Or past a cereal box. Or past instructions to his sister's sippy cup. Or past anything written

If he (2nd grade) doesn't finish it at his after school program he will sit at the kitchen table and work on it while I make dinner. We do our reading right before bed and the reading log gets done in the morning before school.

We have a tiny house, no room for a dedicated desk. Plus he still wants to be near me when he does it.

We also do homework at the dining room table. It is open to the living room and adjacent to the kitchen. She needs help reading directions or asking questions and we do not have dedicated desk area in her bedroom yet, nor do we have an office (the computer desk is also in the 'dining room' area right by the table) so eventually she will get a desk in her room someday.

I think your setup is fine and as she gets older she will either want to move to a more quiet/focused are and start self-motivating to do so, or you can move towards more of a group homework time and then the other kids will be less distracting as they'll also be doing school work and you can be present/assisting all of them. She'll need less help and they'll need more balancing out your attention.
Of course that's just hoping - it may work out very differently but if I were in your shoes I'd continue what you're doing with that plan in mind.

Oh! One actual idea or change you could make would be trying to let her listen to music with headphones to keep the other noise/kids from pulling her attention away. Just a thought! Something calming or focusing that you two can agree on.

In my kid’s gr 1 class, the teacher plays classical music while the kids are working. She calls it “brain music”. What if you set you LO up with music and headphones and see if that helps with the distraction? I know my kid wouldn’t like to be doing homework away from us. Not yet, anyways.

They do homework at the dining table...not that there’s any other choice because we just don’t have room for a dedicated desk. Anyway, if the homework is taking too long I would let the teacher know.

My oldest is only in K with optional homework. She likes to do them but need us to read the directions so we do it at the dining table or kitchen counter. She currently room share with her younger sister, and there's no space for a desk there. I also don't really want to change the playroom set up to add a desk as baby brother will eventually move into that room. Soooo if she is ever in need of a quiet place, she'd probably to do our split level den where our "office" space is. Since I don't even own a laptop anymore, I'd probably clear out my stuff and let her have my desk space (the other 2/3 space is DH's and he needs it).

My eldest child (7 years old/second grade) is at the point where she has daily homework for school. It should take us no more than 15 minutes a day, but is currently taking a lot longer. I think it's in part due to all the distractions she faces (younger siblings being loud, me bustling around the kitchen, proximity to the playroom where her stuff she hasn't seen all day is located, etc.)

I think it would help to give her a designated place to do her homework. Currently she's wanting to work at the kitchen island or table - she'd like to be near me, she needs ocassional help (moreso with staying on task and doing her best than with the actual work - I find she gets distracted and starts playing with toys or starts just doing really lazy work - not reading directions, etc. - if I'm not around)...and I don't like the idea of "banishing" her to her bedroom. I'm considering a desk in our office (near the kitchen), but not sure if that will really meet our needs.

Anyone else facing a situation like this? Where does your child go to do his or her homework? I feel like it's not the end of the world now...I can ultimately stop what I'm doing for 15-30 minutes and coax her through/try to silence the siblings/help her maintain focus...but that's not going to be possible as her assignments get longer and her siblings start having work as well.
