Thanks for all of the good advice everyone. I know I'm being an overly concerned first-time mom - I just want to do it all right! But I know he'll be okay regardless.

@MrsB2012: Ooh thanks for those videos. I think we're going to attempt the first one. I'll look up the super swaddle

@PinkElephant: That's a good idea! My DH went out to buy the SwaddlePod a few days ago when we figured out that our small SwaddleMe was too big, and we were shocked to find that even the SwaddlePod was too big!!

@ShootingStar: Thanks for this advice. He also prefers to have his head to one side, so I'd like to avoid the flat head if possible. I'm about to break out my Boba Wrap when my DH gets home to try it out. That should help if I use it a little bit every day, plus some cuddle time on me and DH

@bushelandapeck: Oh wow, RnP in the crib! Good to hear that a ped recommended it. Thank you!

@Mamasig: Ours is fighting the swaddle too, but we're going to persist and try it out a few more times.

For the first 2 months DD slept mostly in a Moses basket. We'd move the basket from room to room during the day and at night I had it right beside my side of the bed.

At 2 months she started sleeping in her floor bed. Sometimes I co sleep with her but mostly she sleeps there by herself.

eta: to clarify she didn't spend all her time in the basket. She slept on me a lot too and I wore her places.

Both my boys moved to their cribs around 6-8 weeks. Before that DS1 slept in his pack n play. First in the newborn bassinet and then without. DS2 slept in the rock n play all night. I'd feed him, stick him in it, and rocked it a bit as we both drifted back to sleep. Even after he moved to his crib, I would still put him in it if he had a rough night or trouble falling back asleep. I was very sad when he completely outgrew it.

Oh and both my boys didn't like the swaddle. I would try but quickly gave up when they fought it.

NOt a newborn but DD (4 months) sleeps in her rock and play inside her crib :) This was per the recommendation of our pedi as she has a bit of reflux but I was ready for her to move to her own room around 3 months. I'm hoping to transition her to just her crib over the next couple of weeks.

Just don't let him spend 24 hours a day (or all of his sleeping time) in the RnP. They can sometimes lead to flat heads. Make sure to do lots of tummy time, babywearing, holding, etc. my son got a little bit of flat head from sleeping in the swing and always having his head turned in one direction. It eventually evened out, but if I were to do it again I'd use more variety of sleeping surfaces.

To solve the tiny baby, big Swaddle device problem (and the fact that I was an awful swaddler), I'd swaddle my 5.5 pounders in an A&A blanket, then zip them into a swaddle pod, woombie, or love to dream. The extra layer made the zipper style swaddles fit safely.

Just posting a couple youtube swaddle videos incase you haven't seen these particular swaddles. The first one is the one that I found easiest to learn to swaddle with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4SnaQ1DVJM

THere's a better video of the super swaddle, but I can't remember where I saw it. I've never done the super swaddle, but apparently it's a miracle worker :)

@regberadaisy: @magnolia: Thanks for the advice. Rest is good!

@MrsF: That's good - I already feel better about the RnP knowing so many people use it. Thank you!

@jedeve: Thanks for your awesome tutorial and encouragement. We'll try it out. I think the key to keeping his arms in may actually be leaving the bottom out so his feet are free, I hadn't thought of that. We have the aden and anais blankets, but my DH is convinced they're too big completely unfolded. I'll give it a go myself

I agree with @regberadaisy: try not to worry about where baby sleeps, just let them sleep in whatever works so you can get some rest.

My 2 month old is sleeping in Baby Bjorn bouncer right now. Once he gets really asleep I will carefully put him in his crib

We used the RNP for all sleep for months with DD and had no problems transitioning to the crib. We're using the RNP now with DS (10 weeks). I love how your can rock them for a bit to soothe them to sleep and then not have to move then once they're asleep.

We just use the PNP. The bassinet attachment felt unsteady.

My DH is a master swaddler but it takes practice! Do you have stretchy blankets like aden and anais? That helps a ton. Flannel blankets are too stiff.

DH's trick is like this:

Fold the blanket into a triangle, but with one side longer than the other. Lay the baby in the middle. Take the right side and pull it over the baby's left arm, but not his right arm. Tuck it under. Then out your hand on the baby's right side, where you just tucked the blanket under, and pull the left side of the blanket as tight as you can. Then put the baby's right arm down and fold the left side of the blanket over, as tight as possible. Wrap it all the way under and tuck it into the front of the blanket.

He never would tuck the bottom part up because the baby would just out grow it and it would loosen the top too much.

I know you are super super sleep deprived. It will get better!

@Mae: We have tried regular blankets, and we haven't mastered it quite yet, he always gets his arms out! But we'll keep trying. It makes him very very fussy when we mess around with him a lot trying to get it right, so we took a break from it just for our sanity, but will try again in the next day or two. I also would like to use the bassinet in the PNP for transition reasons like you mentioned, but I agree -sometimes it's important to just survive and get a little sleep, which is where the RNP comes in!

@regberadaisy: That's good to hear. I have heard the RNP is a "miracle worker" and so I figured tons of newborns must sleep in it regularly!

Our LO slept in the bassinet of the PnP for almost 6 months in our bedroom.

Have you tried swaddling with just a blanket rather than a swaddling "device"? Takes a little practice, but it works! Especially when they are that tiny.

That being said I know others have their LOs sleep in a RnP or swing for weeks or months even. I didn't want to because I thought if she was used to sleeping in the bassinet the crib transition would be easier because it was similar. And it was NBD when we moved her to a crib at almost 6 months. But I think that early the name of the game is just survival so you do what you have to do :)

Our son is 4 days old, and I'm already worrying about the right place for him to sleep. So far, he stays settled and sleeps the best in the Rock 'n Play, but is it okay for him to sleep in this all the time, including while we're sleeping? Our original plan was to have him sleep in the bassinet in the PNP, but we haven't yet mastered the swaddle and he won't sleep there. He's somewhere between 5 and 6 lbs right now, and even the tiniest of the "easy" swaddling items on the market are too big for him. What has everyone else done? Am I worrying too much about this? (first-time parent here!)
