My parents adopted my little sister when we lived in Korea... it's an important issue.

That was sad about how the 18 year old kids are putting themselves on an adoption registry, just because they want a family. :-(

Amen! Fortunately, I was raised VERY aware of this. There is a group home near my parents - I had several friends there growing up, and we tried to adopt two of them (the brother had FAS, though, and my parents had no experience with FAS.) We did foster care, and after that, my mom was a court-appointed special advocate for kids in or coming out of bad situations. I hope to do the something similar after we've had our 2.

ETA: It was interesting when my husband said that there aren't orphanages any more. Yes, dear, there are - they are just called youth/group homes.

@MsLipGloss: Yeah, I'm with @Mrs. Jacks. She is not suggesting that anyone wage a "mommy war" in the way that term is used whatsoever. In fact, she is criticizing the whole idea (just like you!) by turning the term on its head. Great blog post!

@MsLipGloss: I really don't think the blogger was equating this with a mommy war, but rather co-opting the term for positive change. Great blog post you found, Elsa! Thanks so much for sharing :)

I understand her point, it's just that the idea of bashing/marginalizing other mother/parenting issues for the sake of championing any cause (even the most legitimate and serious, as these issues are!) is an ill-conceived idea on so many levels. For starters, isn't there already enough guilt being thrown around to last all mothers a lifetime and then some? Emotional blackmail, whether it be for the sake of BFing, vaccines, or otherwise, is so not cool in my book. I could go on and on, for example, about how on one hand the author berates mothers for their seeming pettiness, and then on the other hand wants them to cast aside their pettiness and join her in battle . . . seriously? These are the same women, after all , that she accuses of feeling insecure and/or defensive about their parenting choices; she even goes so far as to call their issues *non-essential* parenting issues. I digress.

Do I think the issues are hugely important and warrant championing? You betcha! (times inifinity! my mom was a foster child). Will I do it at the cost of humliating/guilting another mother? Not a chance.

@MsLipGloss: I don't believe Kristen is trying to make them into a "mommy war" in fact she touches on that in the post. What I got out of it is that there are many other very important issues out there than some of these "wars."

This kind of sums it up for me:
"The only mommy war I support involves moms banding together to talk about the number of children in our world who are missing out on basic human needs. Security. Love. Affection. Let’s wage a war about that. Not everyone can adopt, but we can all do something. Even if it’s just using our voices for something more productive than personal parenting choices.

Let’s stop quibbling about what competent mothers are choosing for their kids, and step it up for the kids that don’t have one."

I would hate to see the seriousness of these issues dilluted in any way by them being relegated to a(nother) *mommy war.*

While I don't believe adoption is the right thing for everyone, I do believe that there's so much more that people could do to help orphans here is the US and all over the world.

As a teacher and an adoptive mom to be, this post really hit home and I thought it was worth passing along.
