@anbanan15: yes to the LATCH limits! At some point a belt install is necessary and I personally feel it's so important to be able to install the seat belted and with LATCH.

We've had the seat in every postion except the middle, it seems. Our cars have had either a hump or those pull down things to acess the trunk, so we've alway installed the seat outboard.

For LO1 it was center with seatbelt as our center seats don't have latch in the Camry. We have a new car so for LO2, it will be latch either behind driver or passenger (captain's chairs) but we'll have to see how they fit and pick what's best for ease of putting them both in. I haven't decided yet!

@anonysquire: yes what @avivoca: said. That's the tether and most seats do not allow it to be used refacing and/or your car may not allow using it when refacing, so you will want to double check both manuals. You will want to tether for sure when you turn the seat to FF.

@LindsayInNY: Middle seat as it is safest! Also, since you're also in NY, I used a professional car seat safety guy who taught us how to install it with and without the base. He was recommended by our infant cpr & safety teacher. He also showed us how to safely strap the baby in to the seat itself. The number of people who install the carsest and strap the baby in is insanely high, that's why we did it. I think he charged $100 and came to us. (I think you're outside of the city so he may not go to you, but if you come to him I think he charges even less). We're about to use him again for convertible car seat installation. Let me know if you want his info and I'll wall you.

Middle seat (we did our research and found out that's the safest place, got confirmation of this when we got it inspected) and it had to be seat belt since out car doesn't have LATCH in the middle seat (found that by looking up our model of car online).

Initially I had the infant seat in the middle with the latch, I didn't realize that in most cars you can't use the latch system in the middle since you are "borrowing" a latch from each seat. So then I put it behind the passenger because I think it is safer to get in/out without traffic going by (like on the drivers side).

Ours was behind the passenger seat and installed with LATCH. I've done a baseless seatbelt install too and it was no big deal.

@anonysquire: So is it installed with the seat belt in its own seat and then tethered from the top? You will want to make sure that Combi allows for rear-face tethering. Most seats don't allow for that and you use the top teacher when they are forward-facing.

@Foodnerd81: @anonysquire: I'm wondering if she has the actual seat attached with the belt and then the top tether attached to the driver/passenger seat and that is want she is calling latch? Which in that case, if the seat is attached with the belt and is also top tethered and the seat and car allow a top tether RF seat, then that is allowed. If the seat is attached with both the belt and the lower anchor (LATCH), then no that is not allowed unless it is a foonf. Also interested in what seat it is.

ETA: I think the Nuna Pipa is the other seat that allowed LATCH and belt install at the same time. Let me double check... <--- yes it is the Nuna Pipa and FF Foonf that allow both used together

@anonysquire: It is LATCH or belt, not both! There are only a few seats that allow both to be used at the same time. Clek Foonf is one of them, so unless you have that seat and are FF with a child between 20-65 lb in it, I would remove either the belt or LATCH reinstall and pick one.

Info on the foonf in case that's what you do have: http://clekinc.com/support/documents/clekus000066/

@LindsayInNY: I did behind passenger because it was easier for me to reach back there if needed. Neither side is safer over the other.

Also there are weight limits to lower LATCH anchors which is something new I just learned and something to keep in mind as LO grows. Both your car and car seat manuals will specify what the combined child + seat weight limit is. After that point you have to switch to a belt install anyway (newer seats have the weight limited printed on them...it's more for when child is older and not really an issue in an infant seat).

With my first two it was LATCH behind the passenger. With my 3rd it will be LATCH behind the driver. I wanted to use LATCH and our car seat was not compatible with the spacing for the middle seat.

If you only have one child and could get a good install, the middle is the safest. If you have more than one child than the least protected goes in the middle (example is one if FF). After that the outboard seats are both equally as safe. In addition, as long as the seat is installed properly both LATCH or belt install are equally as safe as one another. You can also do the European belting path if you are installing an infant seat without the base, where the shoulder belt wraps around the infant seat and and the lap portion of the belt goes in like normal.

@LindsayInNY: I think most people do passenger side for driver leg room. I have heard that actually the driver is slightly safer because the driver instinctively protects himself? Not sure if that is true though.

Also if you parallel park, having it on the passenger side means you are on the sidewalk taking it or and putting it in, vs standing in the street to do it.

@anonysquire: I would double check on the seatbelt and LATCH thing. Every thing I have ever read says only use one or the other- using both makes it less safe (there is meant to be some movement in a crash by the seat, so baby doesn't take the brunt of it, and using both changes the points and direction of the force). Definitely do a little research!
