DS either sits next to the dresser in his room facing the wall or in the entry hallway facing the wall. He doesn't have any toys or distractions in his room.

He caught on to time outs pretty quickly and will stay where we put him. He even goes (crying) by himself when he has been naughty and we tell him it is time for a time out.

@locavore_mama: we started around 15 months.

@locavore_mama: We started at around 15 months old. For about a minute or so. Or if it is something really bad, enough time for mommy and daddy to calm down so we can deal with it. Then we explain and we ask for a sorry and a hug.

We spend a lot of time ignoring. So if he talks we ignore him. Then also, if he gets up we put him back and say time out the first time. After that no talk to look just put him back. Very supernanny ish

Any place that he can sit down. So he have used by the front door (a favorite), by the TV (on the side so he can't see it), his room (oh he hates his room but he doesn't sleep there so I see no harm).

Ours is currently our foyer/entry. There's not much there so we just sit lo on the floor in the corner. It's really more of a 'cool down from your unwarranted tantrum' spot than 'time out' so far though. They will stay put with a few reminders.

Honestly she got it right away. I do sit in the same room as her and she usually stares me down through her sobs. Her most recent spot was in the hall. She laid down and had a conversation with the ceiling.

For us it's anywhere- LO understands that if he moves, we move him back and more or less restart the clock on the timeout (we don't have an actual clock and we don't actually time it, but he understands that if he keeps moving, he will be in time out indefinitely whereas if he stays put for a minute or two, then we'll discuss the problem behavior and he can leave time out).
To get him there, we just had a couple time outs where he'd move, and we'd move him right back and explain that he would be in time out until he could do it without moving around. A couple times it took quite a while, and eventually he got sick of it and just wanted to be done with time out so he sat still. If he moves, I'll move him back and then return to doing whatever I was doing- I don't sit with him (LO loves attention more than anything in the world, so sitting with him in time out doesn't quite do the job!)

At home, it's anywhere, but she faces the wall with nothing around her to distract. She doesn't understand the "don't move" part so I literally sit with her in time out and make sure she doesn't speak or move.

@MamaG: How long did it take for her to get the "don't move in time out" concept? My LO isn't there yet.... but it's new to us both.

We tend to put LO in doorways. Like the doorway to our room or her room. She can't reach anything fun. We also have a little entryway to our bathroom, that's a favorite spot to use as well (we close the bathroom door and she's in a little nook between our family room and bathroom).

I'm not sure these help as we don't have a dog. We just put her somewhere that nothing is within arms reach. She's fairly obedient to the "don't move during time out" concept.

We just started time outs today. LO thinks it's super funny to hit and kick our dog, which obviously is not ok. She wasn't responding to me explaining to her why it's not ok, so I am going to try time outs.

Problem is the most convenient time out place for us isn't working. The dog has access and gets up in our face (she's still a puppy and needs her own discipline still) so I'm trying to keep the dog away, keep LO in time out, and LO even hit her once while she was in time out. So I need to put her in a room where I can shut the door and leave the dog out.
