@annem1990: That's a good point; better to take care of ourselves since our problems eventually become our kids problems! And I feel the same way about the 529, that's why I haven't opened any yet. I go back and forth all the time, like they def 100% should be going to some sort of college, but then again, who knows what the landscape is like 10-15 years from now...

@DillonLion: Thanks! That's what I was leaning towards. I'll just max our IRA since deadline is 4/15 and the rest into investment.

We always fund our Roth IRAs. Our main priority is always to max those out (I think it’s 6,000/each in 2019). After that I might do a 529, but I worry about them a bit. I don’t like the restrictions put upon them on what qualifies as an expense. I don’t want to have the added stress of what to do with the $$ if the kids decide not to pursue higher education. I would never want to push it just because we have this plan. So I guess we’d lean towards putting it into a separated investment account that we can retrieve funds for any reason. Our philosophy has always been to fund our (me and DH’s) future/retirement first and make sure each year its on track before we put money into children’s accounts. My DH’s and his sibilings Bachelor’s were totally paid for but his parents were (and still are) in financial ruin. We will be dealing with the consequences of caring for parents with no money long after any student loans would’ve been paid off and the stress it has on all of our lives is insane.

I'd prioritize that list this way:

IRA
529
Investment Account

I'd max out IRAs for both you and spouse (if applicable) and then split the rest over the other two (529 and investment)

We have our checking cushion and emergency savings set. No debt. I'm debating between our IRA, another investment account (where our savings are invested), or using the money to start our kid's 529... Or should I split the $ and do all? It's not a ton (about 6k) so it's not like I need to be concerned with maxing out anywhere.
