@LindsayInNY: nope that's exactly what it is! just stretched over wood. it's stretched pretty tightly so i have no problems writing on it. sometimes the writing on the wood part isn't perfect... but i'm not a perfectionist! i plan on using it once baby arrives too for monthly photos!

@loki: Just checked out your bump photos! Does the canvas have something under it? I picture regular canvases stretched over a wood frame and imagine they would be hard to write on?

@LindsayInNY: Theyre typically used for drawing! They're basically highly pigmented chalk. I use them a lot and I had them on hand when I didn't like how regular chalk turned out on my board so I used them. Much better! The colors are more vibrant and I can be more creative.

http://www.amazon.com/Pastels-Drawing-Scrapbooking-Assorted-Colors/dp/B000BKYB2M

They also last forever. I'm still using the same palette I bought 3 years ago and I'm no where near needing to buy another.

I use chalk pastels for my chalkboard. The color is more intense and has more variety than standard chalk. It comes off easily with a wet paper towel!

@LindsayInNY: yes! We bought this from Ikea and used chalkboard spray paint. Hung it up and LO draws on it all the time. Use a water paper towel to clean it and looks new again.

@avivoca: yes agreed i thought they looked so good but heard horror stories about them! regular old chalk works for me. and i find dipping it in water and then writing makes for nice crisp letters! there are some pics of the one i made in the April Baby Bump thread if you're interested in seeing the canvas etc.

I made mine, but be wary of the chalk markers. It took some serious elbow grease and a magic eraser to get that stuff off.

@LindsayInNY: we used chalkboard paint on the door to the laundry room (kids love it) and it does clean up just as well as a regular chalk board!

I use a wet rag once a week to get it really clean

Chalkboard paint from Home Depot, but I would imagine an office supply or teacher supply store would have them.

If you have a black/chalk board, where did you get it? I want a portable one or one to eventually hang on the wall but not too big. I have NO idea where to find it though!
