I think option 2 is best because it sets you up for not having to change rooms a bunch of times. The guest room doesn't need to be big so I'd ditch some furniture so that the baby can have the bigger room. I don't think office/playroom combo is a very good idea.

I voted 1, but I would stay open to the idea of switching things around as your family grows/needs change.

I voted one. I do not like idea #3, but that is because our home office is the WORST room in our house for LO to play in - he cannot resist the office cords, lights on computers, etc and is always near messing something up.

I vote whatever room you can keep dark and quiet and temperate for naps and nighttime sleep and to make the family room the play area. Honestly, until my son was around 8 months old, he didn't need a "play area" - his baby gym and his pack n' play and jumperoo were plenty to keep him happy - and you probably can't cram all that stuff in his room anyway. When they are starting to walk and stuff, they want to roam around the house anyway, so a bedroom is only so useful.

My son has a bedroom and he mostly sleeps in it. We play with him in there for an hour or so a day just to change up the scenery, but most of the time he plays in this play area that we set up in the living room.

I think it depends on how much time you think you will be spending in baby's room. Even though my baby is still in our room at 10 weeks, all diaper changes, about half of the nursing sessions, some play, and all laundry folding take place in her room every day. So I think the nursery should be where you would rather spend time.

I chose #1, which is similar to what we did. We left our guest room (which was the largest room) as it was, other than the closet is not filled with stuff that used to be stored in my office. Some of my office stuff went to DH's office/room and my office was turned into the nursery.

The nursery is the smallest of the three rooms, but we don't keep any toys in there or spend much time there other than reading books before bed, changing diapers and sleeping. I really liked the idea of having separate sleep and play spaces, and it works well for us.

We were in the same situation and we chose option 1. My parents visit fairly regularly and I wanted a room that would comfortably fit a king guest bed. I also figured if we had 2 kids they could each have a similarly sized room. I didn't think it would be fair for one kid to have a room twice the size of the other's.

@Freckles: we sleep in the guest room just as much as we sleep in the master. The guest room fits the five pieces of bedroom furniture just fine, but adding in my four pieces of office furniture wouldn't work. I figured the dedicated play space would be cornered off with baby gates.

@SweetiePie: as long as we keep the oh-so comfortable mattress/ bed spring I don't mind a small guest room. Our guests don't stay long enough to unpack and settle in and the dressersame are completely empty. The furniture came with the husband  and all just so happen to fit the larger room.

I would go with #2.

I wonder how often you use the guest room? I would also think about doing a guest room/office combo in the big room instead of a playroom/office combo (if that's the route you go). All i'm thinking about is cords and drawers being pulled left and right by the baby!

I'm in the minority but I like 3! But honestly the lazy side will just pick 1 and then see what happens.

But I think in the long term, 3 would make sense,

I voted 1, but that's because I am lazy and I wouldn't want to get rid of any furniture if it's all set up.

After spending a ton of time in my son's room when he was a newborn, the last place I wanted to have play time was that room, lol!

I voted 2. Bigger area for baby to play and room share is good. But the darker/cooler room is what sold it for me. Guest room doesn't need that much space - baby will use it daily, guests will be...monthly? (Just guessing, but either way it will be less than the baby!)

We have a 3 bedroom apt and the larger room is our sons. The smaller room has a pull out couch and my husband's desk and a TV. So it's mostly used as an office or sitting/tv room. Occasionally we've had a guest stay there. It's tight when the bed is pulled out but it works out just fine, no one complains! Just giving the perspective that a guest room doesn't have to be big :-)

I voted for 1. It's the easiest option, and gives baby all the room s/he needs initially. You can always change things up when baby gets older!

Two- I moved Ts nursery when we moved her from the crib. She went from a room with a lot of light which was beautiful but gets hot in the summer and is really bright to my office which only has one window and is bigger. I like that she can play in her bedroom and it's cool and dark. It was a pain to change rooms at 4 mo.

Given your experience with how much time babies and toddlers pend in their own rooms, what would you do?

Here's our situation...

We have three rooms that could be the baby's room.

The largest is currently the guest room and has a five piece bedroom set including a sleigh bed and a two person bench. All of that furniture cannot fit in either of the smaller rooms. That room is painted a bright darkish teal and has minimal sunlight because we planted a bushy palm tree for privacy.

The other two rooms are the same size, get a lot of sunlight and we both work from home quite often. One room is my home office, which will have to remain intact somewhere. The other is my husband's dedicated space and can be dismantled- love seat & chair given to charity and guitars housed elsewhere. Both of those rooms are painted a light gray.

Here are the options I have thought about so far and I'm open to other solutions.

One: keep guest room as-is, use one of the smaller two rooms as a nursery, and keep the other as an office. (Easiest option).

Two: give baby the larger room, which will be great for sleeping & playing esp as baby gets older, make one of the smaller rooms the guest room (furniture reduction), keep the other small room as an office. (If we have baby #2 this set up will be quickest transition for room sharing)

Three: make the larger room a home office & play area for the baby, make one of the smaller rooms a guest room and the other smaller room a nursery.

Other play space would just be our family room.
