You could also stay in Del Mar, L-Auberge is right in the middle of shops and restaurants and a block from the beach, a great park, the train - which you could take downtown and to old town...

There are a million great choices downtown but with kids I'd probably rather be near the beach. That said Downtown has a children's museum and the Waterfront.

Little Italy is great too.

I live here and love it here...ask me anything!

No problem, here's a couple more tips to help you decide on your accommodations.

SD is pretty spread out in comparison to other cities and having a car makes it a lot easier in terms of getting around but here are a couple suggestions for where to stay and what to do in those areas.

Downtown: If you decide to stay in the downtown area you are near good food places and touristy things are convenient (Horton Plaza Mall, Little Italy, Seaport Village, Waterfront Park, the Midway, New Children's Museum). You can take the trolley to get around and a car is not needed as much. You can get to Old Town, the Zoo and Balboa Park by transit too. In fact having a car might even be a burden since parking can be a pain unless there's a parking structure dedicated to the hotel. If you aren't afraid of walking around this is a great place to be.

La Jolla: This is about 20 minutes away from DT SD without traffic. If you stay at the LJ Shores Hotel you are right on the beach but you would need to drive to Downtown LJ for food and touristy things. (There may be a bus, but I haven't taken it) You can also visit the Birch Aquarium (free if you have BofA during the first full wknd of every month) and LJ Cove to see the sea lions.

Legoland: This is 45 minutes north of DT SD and 20 mins north of LJ. You can visit the Carlsbad Outlets while you're there. There is a hotel nearby and also a beach there. Legoland closes at 5 or 6pm so I recommend getting there early and doing what you can since you will still have the rest of the evening to do something else. I think one day is enough for Legoland.

Hope this helps!

@SweetiePie: We drove to all the places mentioned above (Legoland, Old Town, Balboa Children's, the Science Center, the sea lions cove, safari, zoo) and then just planned to grab what I needed from convenience or grocery stores as I went to and from those places. The freeway is zippy as long as you don't go during rush hour.
La Jolla is the best beachy area with little shops. I have never stayed there only visited. Also walked along the beach by Torrey Pines. I have only stayed at Hotel Circle (convenient, right off the freeway), Sorrento Valley (friends, burbs) and Old Town-cheap, we love Mexican anything. Old Town is pretty walkable and they have a trolley.

@sheskrafty: @Banana330: very helpful thanks!
I guess looking at a map things look a lot further than they are. Like La Jolla from downtown.
I live in NYC and things just seem so much more spread out everywhere else. But if it's only 15 mins that actually isn't bad.

@808love: hmmm ok. Can you give me an example of the things you like to do when you go?
I should say we don't mind driving to do must-see things in SD and surrounding. I guess we just want to be able to walk out of the hotel and have food options and other things. Like if we stayed at some of these resorts in say La Jolla or Coronado it seems like maybe we'd have to get in the car and drive if we wanted to get food or like go to a convenience store for diapers. I guess we want easy access but are totally OK with driving a bit for great attractions.
Am I making any sense?
I've literally never been to Cali so I have no frame of reference whatsoever.

We just stayed at the La Jolla Shores hotel, it was fantastic and right on the beach! It's only a few minutes (we left for a nap) from downtown La Jolla where there is plenty to see, do and eat.

@SweetiePie: I've stayed in the Gaslamp for conferences before. There's lots of restaurants and it's very walkable etc. I've stayed at both westins. The pools are pretty small, but that wasn't an issue since I was working. Check and see if there are conferences on while you're there.. it could impact where you want to stay.

@SweetiePie: There is a lot to see at Balboa park. Gaslamp is good but it is a city but I believe you would do city things-not necessarily classic SD things. I went shopping there. You will have to drive. With GPS it will be easy to get around.

Ok so after talking to DH he would rather stay somewhere that's more walkable/easy to get around. And we are militant about his nap so we agree it will be better to stay somewhere that it's easier to go back and forth for the nap. So I'm thinking more like downtown SD vs outskirts. If we do Legoland that's only one day and we don't mind a longer drive for that one day (that's the day we'll bend the rules and let him sleep in the car). He's 2, so it's not like we'll be able to do everything there anyway.

So, any suggestions on where to stay where it's very walkable for things to do, food, etc? Looking at a map maybe Gaslamp Quarter? Is that a good area?
There are just so many options when I do an internet search, it's overwhelming!
We prob will rent a car to have just in case. But we do want to try and walk mostly. Is that even possible?

If you are planning to go to both Legoland and Downtown SD then La Jolla or Del Mar might be the middle ground in terms of location. There is the La Jolla Shores Hotel which is right on the beach. Coronado is close to Downtown but far from Legoland. If you have a car this may not be an issue, but if you will be using public transportation it'll be a hassle.

I actually made a post on things to do in SD, if you're interested: http://www.hellobee.com/2016/10/07/sunny-san-diego-staycation/

The Hotel Del Coronado is historic and gorgeous! It's a bit pricey (not sure what your budget is) but there are pools, restaurants, it's right on the beach, etc. You basically drive across the bridge from San Diego proper, it's easy.

Hi! Looking for recs on areas to stay in and actual hotels/resorts would be a bonus. Willing to splurge!
We plan on doing all of the usual stuff (Zoo, LegoLand, Old Town, etc) but willing to drive a little if we can get an amazing beach view or something.
Will have 3 full days (Weds - Sun) if that changes anything.
I've never been to SoCal so I'm totally open and clueless!
Oh, and we're going in like 2 weeks. Yikes!

ETA: 2 major requirements are suites and childcare. Mama wants some time off too ;-)
