Depending on the area of La Jolla, the rush hour traffic can be really bad. I'd love to hear more about the kinds of things you're planning to do so I can give suggestions on location. If you're mostly interested in Zoo/Balboa Park/Beaches, somewhere close to downtown would be best. Will you have a car? La Jolla is a neat place to visit (Seal Beach, lots of good restaurants, etc.), but I'd guess prices on hotels and property rentals are insane there . If you're planning to go to Legoland and parks/beaches, you might want to locate yourself in North County so you can more easily get to those places. I am certain that there are many ladies on here who could afford you a bevy of choices better than mine. With that stated, here are my suggestions: Coronado is nice by the silver strand and you would be fairly close to Baja. Also LaJolla has some ritzy places to stay and is by the beach. If you go further north into Temecula, there are many b&amp;b's and wineries galore. Downtown SD has a lot to do and isn't terribly far from the beach but traffic is a beast heading in and out of the city. Escondido has beautiful mountains and one can go hiking and what not.
