Indian Head Resort in Lincoln is fun for a family. They have a pond so you can go on paddle boat rides and both indoor and outdoor heated pools. There's hiking nearby and it's not too far from Santas Village/Storyland if you want to do
something like that.

@Foodnerd81: We love Saratoga Springs and have 3 weekend trips planned for this summer. Nice parks and restaurants, lots of outdoorsy things to do (trails and gardens and of course, the springs!).

Also, I stayed in Portland over the weekend with some friends and forgot how much I love it up there, too.

@Adira: Yeah we really don't need 'busy' so that sounds nice. Off to check it out.

@yoursilverlining: Thanks-- that narrows it down to a more manageable idea!

@Foodnerd81: I've never rented on Winnipesaukee before since we live so close. I've rented on Squam Lake though, here:

http://cottageplaceonsquam.com/index.html

Very cute and a smaller lake, so not nearly as busy. 2 hours from Boston. About an hour from Storyland. 20 minutes from the Polar Caves. 30 minutes from Clark's Trading Post. 30 minutes from Whales Tales Waterpark. There's also good hiking nearby.

ETA: And an hour away from me! :D

@Foodnerd81: It is overwhelming because there are a lot of options!!

This is one rental agency I have experience with – we’ve rented a beachfront camp from them before, and they were easy to work with. They really only do the “lakes region”, which is about 30-45 minutes from Portland.
http://data.krainin.com/vacationrentals#/

Both Sebago Lake ("big" and "little" Sebago and Sebago Cove) and Brandy Pond have good beaches. If you call Krainin, they will be able to easily tell you which properties are right ON the beach (vs. a short walk to a beach).

@yoursilverlining: See, that sounds perfect, but I have no idea how to find the right little lake. Ha- it's like I'm overwhelmed because there are too many good options.

@Truth Bombs: @Adira: @Eko: any recommendations on places to stay in Lake Winnepesaukee? Not sure if C will be old enough for the craziness of Weirs beach (from what I've read) but she might enjoy that for an afternoon.

In southern Maine there are about a zillion little lakes with rental homes/cabins available, many with sandy beachfront. There are also a bunch of small islands with similar set-ups. If you stay reasonably close to Portland (many lakes within an easy ½ hour drive, and ferry terminal in Portland to island access), there is a fantastic children’s museum, lots of restaurants and activities.

Lake Winnipesaukee or Lake Winnesquam in New Hampshire? They're about 1.5-2 hours from Boston. Plus tax-free shopping! Both are close to Weirs Beach which has a ton of attractions (beach, boardwalk, restaurants, mini golf, bumper cars, cruises, arcades, etc).

@hotchildinthecity: You know I used to stop through there every summer on our way to family vacation in VT, but we only ever went to the Amusement park (with 5 kids spanning 11 years I do not blame my parents for not being more adventurous!). But it's a little farther than we had hoped and maybe busier than I'm thinking. I'll look into it though!

@Foodnerd81: Lake George, New York? It's really nice in the summer and also Saratoga is nearby with the horse races and restaurants and stuff.

Any recommendations on areas to do a quick (4 day?) vacation with a 2 year old within a few hours of Boston? Our idea is some kind of cabin on a lake, where we can play in the water, maybe some light boating, and generally relax a little and enjoy the fresh air. Nightlife not required as we will have to be home by 7:30 and I'm pregnant :)

No Cape Cod as we visit family there anyway. Not sure what regions to focus on and we'd like to go in the next couple of months (so I'll prob end up looking at last minute options anyway). Thanks!
