I was at my mom's getting my hair highlighted. I was just out of High School.
I remember we sat there stunned. My then Fiance was in boot camp at the time and I was terrified something was going to happen to him.
It's a day I will never forget.

I was working several blocks away too. As I was walking over the manhattan bridge back over to Brooklyn, I watched the first tower collapse. It was so surreal and get chills to this day when I think about that morning. The next few days, all the awful stories started flooding in. I was pretty much in zombie mode for the next few weeks.

I was a sophomore in high school...I remember that day we were doing a socratic seminar over the Scarlet Letter and all of a sudden my teacher randomly turned on the TV in the room...she must have gotten an email about it--and we watched the 2nd tower get hit. Super surreal.

I was at work in Washington DC. I remember my boss coming in from the office kitchen after she got her usual morning coffee. She said a plane hit the World Trade Center I said what? WE both got online ans started reading. Both towers had actually already been hit.n I'm not quite sure when we heard about the Pentagon. I remember hearing that there was a bomb at the State Dept. We also keep hearing about other planes supposedly headed for DC. We were unable to leave until after 3:30 because the hotel next door had a bomb threat. I remember finally walking to the Metro and seeing Fighter jets circling.

@mrs. wagon: Wow, I'm glad your brother was ok!

I forget sometimes how much it affected Boston, too, since two of the planes came from there. My dad's boss was on one of the planes, and my friend's dad missed his flight (big dig traffic), and it saved his life.

I went to school near an airport, and I remember the complete silence in the air for the next few days being so eery.

I was a junior in college, asleep in my dorm room. My roommate woke me up and told me to turn on the radio (I think someone called her to tell her). We didn't have a tv in our room. My dad called because he couldn't get in touch with my brother, who worked nearby. Turns out he spent all day walking home to New Jersey totally covered in soot. He lost a few friends that day, including a guy who was supposed to be a groomsman in a wedding the next weekend :(

My friend worked in the twin towers but was randomly called to a training in Jersey City that morning. His entire team made it out ok though.

I remember attending memorial services at school because a student lost both of her parents. They were on one of the two flights departing from Boston... they were on their way home from visiting her.

@Andrea: So scary! I can't even imagine. My sister worked over there, too and also had to run for her life! She's had recurring bronchial infections since 9/11 and we think it's from running in that cloud of ash.

I was in NYC, but not near the towers. I was working on Park Avenue. But I was so scared because both my mom and sister worked near the trade center (my sister was closer). We didn't hear from my sister until that evening, thank god she was safe!

I was in college. I woke up late for my first class that day and was rushing to get ready and was really worried about being late. Then my roommate walked in to our room and told me what was happening. Among a lot of other emotions, I distinctly remember feeling ridiculous for worrying about being late for a class and realizing how trivial a lot of the things I stressed about were.

I was young, almost a teenager and my mon was homeschooling us. It was 9am where I was and I was folding a hamper of laundry when we turned on the tv. I remember not really understanding it at the time. At least, at first. Over the next week it was evident how serious it was.

@looch: oh wow... I couldn't imagine watching it.

I was living in Washington DC at the time and had to go to court that day for a traffic violation so was up early.
We had the news on as we were getting ready to go to court, so pretty much saw the very start of the coverage.
I went to court and my case was the first and last they heard before shutting down for the day.

Driving much to DC was awful. All of the local radio stations were broadcasting bogus news of other attacks going on in Washington DC.
They mentioned something at the State Department, which is where my Stepfather worked. Mom kept trying to get ahold of him but all of the cell reception was down.

I could see the smoke from the pentagon from my apartment and was panicking – had no clue if there was more to come.
I got in my car that afternoon and drove 10 hours to Canada, where my dad lives because I felt safer.

It’s so hard to believe that it was 11 years ago…

I was 20 and was working for an older people's project. Tuesday afternoon was pensioners bingo and it was my turn to call the numbers. The first plane hit at around 2pm UK time and, by then, bingo was well underway.

A colleague came running into the community lounge and turned on the TV, which was located behind me. He'd heard about it on the radio and had come to the TV to see what was going on. The second I heard the coverage, the sirens and screams, I knew something really, really terrible was happening. I turned around and saw smoke billowing from one of the twin towers - and just then, as I was watching, the second plane hit.

A groan went up in the room and several of the older people called "carry on" and "call the next number". I announced over the microphone "something really terrible's happening, the world trade centre appears to be on fire and I think a plane has just crashed into them..." More groans. "Carry on!" someone else cried and the inpatient murmurs that resounded around the room echoed that sentiment.

So, as the sirens and the screams continued behind me, I continued calling the bingo, "two little ducks, 22" "Downing Street, number 10".

I think it is one of my most vivid (and harrowing) memories.

I was in 11th grade in art class. Our principal came over the loudspeaker and made an announcement about the events in NY. None of us knew what he was talking about. Since Logan is the closest airport to us, I know there were parents of students flying that day. Our school wouldn't allow anyone to turn on the tv or be dismissed early. It was crazy. Luckily, my last class was spanish and my teacher thought we needed to know what was happening so she let us watch the tv. I just remebered everyones reaction was "holy shit". It was the only time I remember not being told to watch our language...it was a terrible day. Pretty sure vball practice was cancelled that day.

I was two years out of college and was working at another college. I was sitting in my closet of an office when my coworker arrived and told me that a plane hit one of the towers. I continued working because, while still sad, I assumed it was a little plane with only a couple passengers. Coworker continued listening to the radio and told me when the second plane hit. That's when I realized it was serious. I was a technology teacher, and I was also about to start teaching a class. I didn't know what else to do so I started teaching even though only a couple people were there. They were all checking CNN online, and we couldn't concentrate, so we all left and watched the TV in the lobby's building. Definitely a day I will never forget.

I was a freshman in high school at the time. I was actually running late for school that day. I turned on the TV and saw what I thought was a movie playing, but it was the news. I woke up my parents and alerted them to what was going on. My mom dropped me off at school but a couple of hours later she came to pick me up and take me home. Our whole family is from NY and there was too much going on with trying to get into contact with everyone. My mom wanted me home during that process.

I was a senior in high school and was already in 1st period. We were in the library and were watching the news anyways. They were discussing the first plane hitting when we all watched the second plane hit and all quickly realized this was not an accident. It was just the most heartbreaking day. I think the entire school watched until classes ended that day.

@MamaMoose: thank you. I was incredibly blessed that day. Before work, I was debating whether or not to go to the bank because I was low on cash. I decided to wait until my lunch break instead. That was the best decision I have ever made because my bank was in the first tower that was hit. So blessed.

I was one year out of college, but taking classes for nursing/grad school, so I was living with my mom again temporarily in L.A. I remember rushing out the door and noticing a news story on TV, but I was in such a hurry, I didn't stop to see what it was about. By the time I got to my anatomy class, people were leaving because class was cancelled. I went back in my car and listened to the radio. The parking lot was gridlocked for a while and I just sat there, listening... completely horrified and scared.
