Here is a more recent link on boarding policies for US airlines: https://consumerist.com/2016/02/01/united-airlines-reverses-policy-after-four-years-will-let-families-pre-board-again/

Until recently, United did not let children pre-board early.

I think Delta's official position is only those traveling with car seats and strollers at present (changed it a few years ago). Given that - we've never been refused when we tried to board early without those!

However, I agree that unless I only have a newborn who is already sleeping or have to install a car seat, I would rather just wait and board later so LO is confined for less time.

I am glad you posted this! I am flying with Alaska next week. I don't usually fly with them. Its just me and DD so good to know they do!

@lamariniere: Oh yeah, European flying blows the American airlines out of the water (all of them!). They treated E like freaking royalty on both of our recent flights. Huge “swag bag” for kids: stuffed animal airplane, colored pencils (like the nice wood ones, not super cheapo crayons), stickers, activity book, coloring book, etc. Special kids meals, etc.

And yeah, real food and free booze. I need to travel internationally more often!

@yoursilverlining: it's nice, isn't it! Here they still treat you with some level of decency. We flew British on our way back from vacation and there were probably 30 kids under 8 on our flight and we all got to board early. Although, I must say my favorite part of flying with European airlines is the free booze. :silly:

@lamariniere: I was surprised that with Swiss Air the "kid preboard" was for children up to the age of 6! I've only ever seen it for babies/kids up to the age of 2 in the US.

I have also been allowed to pre-board with UA and with AirCanada in the US. And same as @lamariniere: we were always allowed to get on first with all European Airlines.

@LindsayLou: this is my thinking! It can take a long time for a full flight to load. If you have a lot of overhead luggage and want to feed/nurse a baby, I can see the advantage of boarding ahead of time though.

We've flown United domestically 4 times round trip (3 were cross country) and only one leg did we get to board early with LO. One I even had to fight to gate check our car seat.

All the European airlines we flew let us board early. Spain even had a separate family security line with a pack n play on each side in case you had to put your baby down to get into baggage!

Here's a definitive list:
http://tripswithtykes.com/2013/05/10/pre-boarding-kids-which-airlines-still-offer-it/
Personally I don't like preboarding when traveling with B because it means he has to sit still longer! We also try not to carry rollerboard carry one when traveling with him too. So no real special need to priority boarding. If you have special needs, I would encourage you to talk to the gate agent, they can make exceptions even if there is no family preboarding.

Now when I travel without him, I love to be first on the plane. I can settle in, have a drink and make sure that I get a spot for my carry on!

I'm guessing they all do...but I could be wrong. For what it's worth, I travelled when my lo was 7 months, and waited as long as possible to board. She was so antsy and curious, so minimizing the time she had to stay in one place helped immensely.
