@Beyond2: I understand your perspective as well.. Which is why I both love and hate my FB allergy group.. It's made me more aware and also a lot more paranoid!

Personally I'd go with a well established doctor. Especially when it comes to allergies where there seems to be "fads" and trends in the topic. My pediatrician recently told us that the ideas regarding food allergies are actually reverting back to the ways of ~the 1960s. What they thought was best recently is actually turning out to have a negative impact (ex- waiting a long time to introduce nuts). I would prefer an allergist who has seen the studies and trends come and go and who has a lot of tried and true experience with their line of work.

My OBGYN was fresh from residency when I picked her and she's been great. I say go with the new one, you can always switch back later if something makes you uncomfortable.

I think older/experienced docs are better for some areas but in general I prefer doctors who are more up to date.

As a child I went to so many old dermatologists that prescribed antibiotic after antibiotic and topical cream after topical cream. Then I went to college and the dermatologist at the university medical center was able to diagnose my severe cystic acne and get me on a treatment plan and healed me skin.

Maybe look on healthgrades and see if you can find a allergist in your area. I've had good luck finding a great dentist and pediatrician...the reviews were accurate. I went to a dentist with poor reviews and he was AWFUL.

With my specialists I haven't minded the younger ones as long as they're finished with their training. The older ones often look at my case in terms of statistics over their career instead of my actual situation, like "well I've had a lot of patients like you and none of them had __ so I'm sure you're fine"...and it turned out I was that one patient.

@Cole: haha once I got the horses and zebras straight, I think I get what you are saying! I agree that it all depends on whether it is a horse or zebra ;-)

The more medical professionals I deal with, the more I begin to value the younger crowd.
This is of course a hugely sweeping generalization, but I keep finding older doctors with outdated ideas and a very condescending attitude.

I have had a lot of great luck with younger doctors when it comes to things where I want someone aggressive and up to date. There is a saying that goes something to the effect of when you hear hoofbeats think horses not zebras, younger doctors tend to think zebras so they aren't always the best option but when you are dealing with zebras, in my experience, they find them quickly.

@Bluebonnet: My FB allergy group is a nationwide group but I'm sure there is someone out there in my city, so that is a good idea... as for mom's group, I asked before but they all go to this same group. My pedi recommended this allergist to me, but if I get a chance, I will see if she has another recommendation. Thanks for the suggestions!

Would someone in your FB allergy group be able to recommend another pediatric allergist?

Does your pedi have any suggestions on finding another pediatric allergist?

Are you in a Mom's group in your area? Could you post to your Mom's group to see if anyone has leads on a second opinion.

@Bluebonnet: @LuLu Mom: I definitely agree on second opinion.. I just don't know how to choose the new one to go see. I don't know anyone else who has a recommendation since the only one people around me recommend is our current allergist!

And @LuLu Mom: you are right.. she probably is aware, I think her approach is just more measured, whereas my personality is more wanting to get all the latest for my DD to kick the stupid peanut allergy. Those darn FB allergy groups.. too much information!

I agree on a second opinion, tehre's no harm in seeing who else is out there that might be better informed. However I will say everytime I mention a study/trial/ect. to our allergist (who is the top rated pediatric allergist in our state) he always has a good reasoning as to why he hasn't brought it up before. So maybe the doctor is informed but not in agreement with the new stuff?

If your gut is telling you this allergist is good, but maybe not the best fit for your LO, then see another doctor. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.

I've been thinking of selecting a new pediatric allergist for my DD. Her current allergist is very nice, but doesn't seem to up to date on all the latest testing and clinical trials, etc. , even though she is very highly regarded in our suburb. She gives very solid advice, but isn't doing a good job of putting the whole "picture" together, I feel. I've been doing a little research into pediatric allergists in our city's medical center area who are a little more cutting edge, but all of the recommended allergists seem to have less than 10 years experience.

If you have to choose years of experience vs up-to date on the latest and greatest, what would you choose? Assuming you couldn't get both, let's say. Thanks for your input!
