I have flown with my son only two times as a lap child, and honestly, it's more stress for me than it is worth. The flights were short (less than 1 hour) but honestly, I prefer to have my son buckled in a seat. So that means we buy him a seat and he sits in his travel car seat. I can definitely see the lap children becoming missiles... that is a scary thought. EEK! I haven't even seen any pics (thankfully) of a child injured b/c of turbulence but have seen stuff thrown around &amp; the floors a mess with trays/drinks/etc since anything not secured down can become a projectile. Definitely scary to think about! :(</p> <p>From what I read, they aren't necessarily considered "damaged" if checked but should be examined upon landing &amp; not used if any damage is seen &amp; are considered to have an "unknown" history.... I think that depending on what your manual says about wrecked carseats matters too since some car seats are considered okay as long as airbags weren't deployed or other things while others are considered "wrecked" if in ANY kind of accident. And rental seats definitely aren't recommended b/c they could be expired &amp; you don't know how they were cared for.</p> <p>I've seen some pretty nifty set ups from some techs traveling with their kids in their seats.... they were actually connected to their luggage they were wheeling through the airport &amp; the kids were even sitting in the seats just riding along! Forward, yes, but rear, it is difficult to get the angle correct without a noodle or towel. I personally use it for the airplane and it is currently forward facing in my mother's car.
