@kiddosc: I totally agree! I bet most people would choose no kicking over the two inch recline; I know I would. Toddlers don't have the impulse control to resist kicking their feet.

@PinkElephant: Do people really need that 1 inch of recline? :silly: I totally don't understand the people that freak about this.

@psw27: I would choose no recline and no seat kicking every day. The rows are so close together that there's no way a kid is not at some point putting their feet on the seat in front of them. I spend half our flights telling DS to put his feet down.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I totally skipped it with my older girls, but now I think I’m going to need to focus on them...and have to at the same time contain the two year old so she doesn’t run amuck. 🤣 she’s used to long car rides do in’s carcseat, I think she’ll stay still.

@kiddosc: @psw27: I do have our convertible reclined to the same degree as s bucket due to her weight wen I installed it 2-3 months soon)we could probably make it more upright now), so my only concern is that she’s find the bucket a little tighter than what she’s used to. It’s a good point about irritating passengers who can’t recline...I want to be as nice as I can; chances are ONE of my three will irritate someone, though 😝😝😝

I’m going to compare the weight of my current extra seat to see if it’s really worth it to go buy a scenera

Personally, I’d skip the car seat. I’ve flown with LO three times without one and it’s been great not having to lug one around.

If it's a day flight, I'd do a Cosco Scenera or similar installed rearfacing. On an overnight flight, we install forward-facing from 2 years on for easier eating and watching videos. The Sceneras are super light even compared to our infant seat!

I'd do the convertible rear facing. The bucket seats are so reclined that I know my toddler would be angry she couldn't sit up and see more. I'd rear face so she's only kicking her own seat and not the seat of the person in front of her.

I'd do the Cosco Scenera. Super light weight for schlepping through the airport. I would also be cautious to rear face it because that means the person in front cannot recline and that makes some people very very grouchy. At times, I have asked people if they prefer to be able to recline and get their seat kicked versus not be able to recline but no kicking. (NOT that I allow my kids to kick seats, but their little feet always seem to end up on the back of the seat in front of them at least a few times!)

If she hasn't outgrown the bucket seat, I'd almost certianly go with that. It's most likely lighter and easier to carry. And that huge buckle part of airplane seatbelts usually ends up in the child's back with most convertibles forward facing; you could avoid that with the bucket seat for sure.

@Littlebit7: Yes, I did mean bucket seat - you'd think she'd have outgrown it, but at 24 lbs and 29.5 inches, she's more the size of a 1 year old than a 2 year old, so she fits with a little more room for growth - although I certainly don't want to carry her in it anymore! :) We moved out of it in the car, but will still use it for quick trips in someone else's. I have a Safety 1st Guide 65 that is our "extra" convertible which is the lightest convertible we own, and was considering bringing that rather than buying a Scenera because we already own 5 carseats, and I won't use a carseat for travel unless we do another long (4-5 hr+) flight in the next year. She'd have a bit more wiggle room in a convertible, but I don't think she'd actually mind (and wouldn't be unsafe in) the bucket.

@DesertDreams88: @Mrs. Toad: Thanks; I wasn't sure if this was allowed...somehow in 6 years, 3 kids, and tons of travel, circumstances just haven't put us in a position where I wanted someone in a carseat on the plane (either they didn't have a seat, were big enough not to need one, or the flight was super short and I had a seat waiting for me on the other end).

By capsule do you mean infant bucket seat? Are you sure your kiddo hasn’t grown out of it (either height OR weight or head height at or near top of shell? They can outgrow either and it can no longer be used.).
I’d recommend a Cosco scenera next or the cosco finale either way for travel. Convertibles can be installed either ff or rf on a plane.
Your convertible would def work, but I would not want to schlep it through the airport assuming it’s a full size one

You can install a convertible rearfacing on a plane, I've done it multiple times. Also, it's allowed by TSA.

If LO is within the weight and height limits for the capsule, that will be easier to carry and you can put small items in it if she's walking or out.

Otherwise, a lightweight convertible would be best: https://csftl.org/car-seats-travel/
They're very inexpensive.

I don't know which would be better, but we have installed a Chicco NextFit rear facing on a plane.

Which is better for (very small) 2 year old on a 4+ hour flight - a capsule carseat (installed RF) or a convertible carseat (I assume I'd need to install it FF)? I'm asking "better" in terms of practicality, not "which is the absolute very safest" :) I have both kinds of seats that are FFA approved, so do not need to make a purchase either way.

Last time I flew with her, she wasn't walking, so I didn't get her own seat - this is a longer flight, and she's mobile, so I feel like some kind of restraint will save my sanity.

We're flying economy, and have a full row of seats (me, my 4 or 6 year old, and the 2 year old will be together).
