I don't mind any of them, but to me the finger stick pain lingers the longest usually.

I give blood every eight weeks, and they do a finger prick and (obviously) a blood draw for those, and I never experience any discomfort from either of those procedures. So I'd have to say a shot, since sometimes I can get a little muscle soreness from that. To me, it's weird to imagine experiencing pain from a finger prick or a blood draw!

I hate blood draws the most because I can't stand having that needle in me, it's like I can feel it. And especially when they have to collect more than one tube, and I can feel it jiggling as they change them -- ugh! Followed closely by a shot, especially if it's strong medicine, because OUCH and bruising.

I had to get a pic line put in my arm last year and to me, that was way worse than shots or anything. The line went from a vein in my upper arm through to a larger vein in my chest, over 20 inches long. I was on some really strong antibiotics and they kept irritating the injection site, so the only way to go home was to give my self ivs through the pic.

Also, like banana, I'm diabetic, so I poke my finger 4 times a day (or more!) and give myself 2-3 shots a day, so I'm used to those.

I think it depends, some shots are more painful than others but generally blood draws are worse for me because the needle goes into your vein and it hurts even after the needle has been removed.

omg I HATE getting the finger poke! I was so relieved that they never did this during my pregnancy, just in the arm.

@Rachel: I agree about the "milking your finger." It was not comfortable, plus I continued to bleed for a while afterwards. Not fun.

I had my blood drawn a lot when I was younger, so that's not a big deal to me.

I voted finger pokes, but I think they're only worse when they're trying to get a significant amount of blood that way - like when they milk your finger to get the blood out. I'm a fainter, so all three are terrible, in my opinion.

I used to give blood every 6-8 weeks almost religiously, so blood draws don't bother me much, but finger pricks do (even though I always got those, too). I psych myself out about getting shots, but they're usually not as bad as I think they'll be...I got a Tdap a week or two back and it was over before I even had time to blink.

So of the three, physically I dislike finger pricks the most, mentally I hate shots the most, and I'm kind of ambivalent about blood draws.

Well, I have GD so I poke my finger 4 times a day. I'd say blood draw is WAY worse!

@Alivoo01: I do get smaller needles due to my little veins, which makes it go longer, but I can never feel it. The worst part is the elastic around my arm...I hate that!

@JessicaMcB: I did pass my glucose (they did the results in house so I was lucky and had them right away.) I have to do another blood draw this week for rH negative though and I believe they will do my strep B at the same time.

I think a blood draw is worse since the duration is longer, and the needles is usually larger.

@jessiejo17: Ugh my SIL's roll- the last lab draw she had done she started having a seizure after the ninth poke. Now they do her bloodwork at the Children's Hospital, where they apparently do a better job. I'm glad your veins aren't giving you any trouble so far!

I hope you you pass your GD test with flying colors so you don't have to keep sticking yourself- I can see that being unpleasant!

@JessicaMcB: I actually have very small veins that tend to roll and then collapse, but luckily (knock on wood) this pregnancy I haven't had any issues with my blood draws and they haven't rolled once...I'm sure if that wasn't the case I would change my opinion. For some reason finger pokes just bother me! haha

As someone with collapsing veins I'm probably biased, but I'd have to say I'd prefer one finger stick to be needled unsucessfully 20 odd times with or without pressure cuffs, lido, stabbing me in the wrist, ankle, temple or being told by every nurse with something to prove that "I have the worst veins they've ever seen" while they refuse to call the lab tech.

If I had normal veins maybe I'd think differently? They blew out a huge section of veins in my arm during my glucose testing and it was bruised and brutal for a week or so.

Im not sure why but I think from most to least painful for me it goes: shots, finger poke, blood drawn as long as the person drawing blood knows what they are doing lol...

I had to get my finger poked for my glucose test, and I have decided that is way more painful then getting a shot or blood drawn! It throbbed for a good hour afterwards! Am I baby or do others feel this way too?
