I think he would eventually buy himself an iPad but not until his became completely unusable. I'm thinking the tickets would be better because I know he really wants to go to a game but ticket prices are kinda nuts (like $50/ticket for the absolute nosebleed seats). If so (and it's not a question of only being able to budget for the iPad is its a gift), then I say get the tickets/jersey for his birthday, since he might not ordinarily do that for himself, and let him buy the iPad once he really needs it.
