@MrsKerch: for some reason I can't open either link (I get access denied). But in the lens info, you should probably see a number that starts with "f" like "f3.5" or "f2.8". That's the aperture. The smaller the number, the faster the lens.

I have a Canon, so there's my bias. I wouldn't get either bundle. I have the 18-55mm lens and it does the job. I also have the 50mm that everyone here is referencing. I use them both differently. I really want to invest more in a 35mm as I'm finding that I don't love my 50mm as much as I once did.

I'm curious about the 30mm that I'm seeing mentioned here.

I bought a bag, couldn't tell you where it even is anymore. I never use it. My camera goes in my diaper bag when we are out. And memory cards aren't that much more.

I would however consider going down a model to the t5i. I'm not sure the t6i adds much other than cost because it's new. But do a comparison. I bought a t3i just as the t4i was getting launched and got a great deal. And I don't at all feel like I need to upgrade the actual body after 4 years.

@PurplePumps: good point.

I shoot with a full frame so a 35 is the equivalent on a crop sensor so it depends on the body. So it really depends on the whole setup.

I prefer Canon cause that's just what I got used to, but I agree with lamariniere about not bothering with the bundle. I would save some money buying the body that usually comes with that 18-55 lens but pass on the other one and invest on a 30mm 1.4(or the 50mm 1.8) instead. Everyone loves the nifty fifty, but I would even suggest to pass on that one and go straight for the 30. I bought the 50mm and then found that it's just not wide enough so now it just sits and collects dust while my 30 stays on my camera 90% of the time.

@youboots: the 50mm F/1.8 prime lens is a great lens (for kiddos). I shoot with it most of the time.

@lamariniere: I totally agree. I think it's a way better option to buy a body and fixed lens- if you are going to be shooting kids a 50mm is a great lens. AP mode is awesome for beginners.

Those kit lenses can be huge and too bulky to be very convenient IMO.

I shoot Canon.

Nikon! Both Nikon and Canon are good, but the Nikon lenses edge out the Canon lenses (Nikon lenses are sharper imo). So my preference is Nikon. But really, you can't go wrong either way!

Each option comes with slightly different lenses, and I'm having difficulty telling what the aperture would be? That's the one thing I don't know anything about and am looking forward to learning about!

Here's one: http://www.costco.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T6i-DSLR-Camera-2-Lens-Bundle.product.100178669.html

Photo nerd here. I don't think brand really matters. Canon and Nikon are both great (I shoot Nikon). What's more important are your lenses and knowing how to use the camera. Can you tell us which lenses come in the kit? I would not buy kit lenses unless they have AT LEAST a 2.8 aperture, otherwise it's going to be a "slow" lens. Often it's cheaper to by a camera body and separate lenses. I mainly shoot with a 50 mm and 35 mm and very rarely use my zoom lenses.

Umm Costco is amazing so that option shouldn't be there!

I like my Cannon but it's really up to you. I would hold each and see how the body feels in your hand.

Total photography neophyte but am thinking of getting one of the DSLR packages offered by Costco because I would like some better quality photos of our kiddo that aren't taken by an iPhone! I have a connection who teaches a DSLR 101 class in the area and plan to take that so I am not just jumping into a sizable investment without any idea on how to control my outcomes.

I'm thinking of going this Costco route because each of the packages come with camera body, two lenses and a bag plus various other perks - batteries or memory card, etc. If I do this, my options appear to be Canon or Nikon. What would you do?
