@nana87: I've never been able to sleep well on red-eyes either, but ever since becoming a mother it no longer kills me the next day like it used to.

I just realized that DST flips on the Sunday I'm returning! So that means I was wrong about the flight time of the redeye and it was actually 4hrs and 45 min. Not that it matters now, since I already booked the nonstop. Oh well, guess that means I need to remember to get up an extra hour early Sunday morning!

I cannot handle red-eyes, pregnant or not. They just wreak total havok on my body and sleep rhythms and I lose the next day anyway. Day flight all the way!

@autumnleaves: @Mrsbells: Thankfully, my boss has been very understanding the whole time and keeps asking "are you sure you want to go?" So I think if I need to back out he'd totally understand. But its for a really great conference in my field and I love going (in general) so I'm actually really excited about it, in spite of the sucky travel.

I voted for non stop but I honestly would try to avoid the trip. I have flown late in the third tri for both my pregnancies most recently I flew at 35 +5 days because we moved across country and I am so glad it was a one way flight. I felt terrible by the end of it.

I would try to get out of the work trip that late in pregnancy. I started having a lot of problems around that time when I was pregnant with LO2 and had a hard time sitting in a chair for even short periods of time.

@JennyPenny: Have you taken red-eyes before? I for one can usually sleep so I don't mind them (but I'm also not 34 weeks pregnant!). But I only like them if it's a long flight where sleep isn't as distrusted.

@JennyPenny: Just to add - my OB did send me with a letter okaying travel and a copy of my records just in case I needed to seek care. I was traveling internationally, though.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go ahead and book the non-stop flight. I just realized that an added benefit is I get a nice Saturday afternoon/night to myself in Seattle which I could probably turn into something really fun if I try.

@ShootingStar: @raspberries: My OBs policy is 36 weeks if you're healthy and complication free, which (knock on wood) I am so far so that should be good. I'll get a note though just in case.

I did a long red-eye at 28 weeks pregnant and definitely couldn't sleep (though I don't sleep well on planes even when not pregnant). I would take the nonstop day flight of those are your only options and rest up the night before.

If there's an earlier nonstop option, though, I would take that. I'm always still on East coast time for my trips to the west so a 6am flight wouldn't phase me.

Just ditto-ing @ShootingStar: - I know Virgin Atlantic makes you have a doctor's note after 28 weeks that has your due date listed and confirms that you have no complications/are safe to fly. I'd double-check whatever airline you're looking at before you book, just in case.

@JennyPenny: I would definitely choose Day flight. I am bad about sleeping on planes and doubly bad about sleeping while pregnant.

I would take the non-stop on Sunday for sure. Red-eyes are miserable and I would rather be awake, watch TV/movies and be able to move around as needed.

@ShootingStar: Only a few airlines flat out ban you, at most they require medical documentation. A few won't let you travel if you are more than 38 weeks (insane to think f doing that, right?)

Are you sure the airline will let you fly when you're that pregnant? Or you OB? I think travel after 28 weeks isn't recommended?

I would go for the shorter flight. I would consider doing the red-eye if it meant shorter flight time, but no sleep and a longer flight, no way!

I've taken a red-eye when I wasn't pregnant, and it's the worst. I'm rendered useless the next day, so I would get a good night's rest, and then take the non-stop flight home on Sunday.

I think no matter what you pick you should prong resign yourself to it being a lost weekend unfortunately. My husband always swears that the day after a red eye he'll do something with us in the morning and just take a nap once my daughter goes down for a nap. It has never happened! He makes it until like 10 and then sleeps for like 4-5 hours every single time. I think I'd just pick the Sunday flight and actually get some sleep!

I have to travel across the country for work in a few weeks and am having the hardest time picking my flights. The work event ends at 2pm on Saturday on the west coast, and I'm flying back to the east coast. Here are my 2 best options:

Red-eye Saturday Night:
Dept 9:30pm PST - Flight time 5 hrs 45 min
Layover 6:16am - 7:50am EST Sun morning
Arrive home 8:48am EST - Flight time 1 hr
Pros: Get to spend Sunday with the family. Not wasting "awake time" on travel.
Cons: Red eye while 34 weeks pregnant? Definitely not getting any sleep. Longer flight time and a layover.

Non-stop Sunday
Dept 8:15am PST - flight time 5 hrs 10 min
Arrive: 4:26pm EST
Pros: Shorter flight time, non-stop
Cons: Basically the whole weekend is gone by the time I get home. And a whole day of "awake time" is spent on a plane.

So, what would you choose? Especially interested if you've tried a red-eye during late pregnancy.
