I was going to say make an offer! If it falls through you have a great back up plan but if it works out it will be so worth it! I know it's hard to leave a great neighborhood but sometimes you have to inconvenience yourself in order to improve your life. Good luck!!

If there is a good public school option, I will always choose that over Catholic school for many reasons. If it's just a religion class, I could begrudgingly get over that, but weekly mass would really irk me and the creation statement in the quiz would send me over the edge! So, as much as I hate to move, that's what I would do.

@SunriseMama: i would move! It sounds like you found a great house in a great school district. If you have enough savings to buy the house first without being contingent, then it makes moving so much less stressful!! You can take your time to sell your current home and wait for a good offer versus being rushed. I voted move!

What a lot of other posters are saying - short term inconveniences/discomfort vs long term gain. I don't think neighbors make a huge difference either; your kids will make friends at school regardless and have people over for playdates and what not.

I was originally going to give some support for the Catholic school option. I was just a kid (and a Catholic kid at that!), but my experience in Catholic schools emphasized "love your neighbor" kind of stuff, with a very liberal slant, and room for non-belief. There were many non-Catholic kids who attended, and they could opt out religious events.

But it sounds like this would not be your experience. (And that quiz sounds very off to me! The Catholic Church does not espouse creationism.) So I think you need to know more about the experience that your children would have, but I would be nervous to send them to the Catholic school in your situation.

I think your best bet is endure the short-term inconvenience of moving to find a better educational fit for your family. We are also not religious, and would not consider sending our kids to a Catholic school (imo, there's a big difference between exposure and indoctrination, and most religious schools fall into the latter category).

As someone who went to Catholic school from K-12 and is now not religious, I would not send my LO to a Catholic school. The "correct" answer to their quiz alone would be a deal-breaker for us. I agree with PP that the short-term inconvenience of moving seems like it would be worth it in the long run.

We have a similar situation where the public schools near us are awful and we'll wind up sending our kids to catholic school. It's even more complicated, in a way, since Dh is Catholic but I'm Jewish and our daughter is being raised Jewish. For me I've accepted the fact that we'll be doing Catholic school even though I'm not a huge fan of it.

But for you it seems like the biggest factor against moving is the hassle of it all. So I guess the question is several years from now once the move is behind you, whew would you rather be?

I think we'd be able to find a buyer. Maybe not right away, but eventually. We have a good deal of savings, so we aren't in a huge hurry to sell. We wouldn't have to do a contingent sale.

@T.H.O.U.: Many public schools in our county are very overcrowded. They occasionally grant variances, but it's only guaranteed for that school year and that sibling and usually only if the school you're zoned for is already 100% capacity, which ours is not.

I'd say we're more agnostic. I don't mind my son learning the religious lessons, and I think they do teach it as "love one another" and community service at a younger age. But, my husband and I looked up a quiz linked from the school's website, and the first question was "Where do we learn about creation of the world?" and the answer was "From the Bible" even though another choice was "From a textbook." That definitely gave us pause.

Thank you so much for your thoughts!!

@SunriseMama: Gotcha! Your comments are similar to my experience in the town we live in. The issue is that there is a large percentage of non-English speakers in the schools and that's what affects the test scores. The bigger issue for us is the long game, the elementary schools are probably fine, but once you get to middle and high school, it's a challenge.

If you list your house for sale, do you think you'll be able to easily find a buyer?

@looch: The ratings on all of the charter schools are extremely low, like 2 out of 10 in great schools. I also know parents whose kids go to each and don't like them for various reasons. Our city is actually the biggest city in the area, and there aren't any magnet schools in any of the surrounding cities, which are all 30-45 minutes away. The nearest magnet schools would probably be 3 hours away, in the next state.

On the original question though, how different are your beliefs from the catholic church? I agree telling a 5 year old that what they are learning in one subject is just "made up" probably will be hard for them to comprehend. Are we talking about the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism? Or Catholicism and Judaism? Or Atheism? Is there a way you can find the good in the catholic teachings (yes, we agree we should all love one another, etc). and just kinda leave it at that for right now?

Seems like a no brainer to me. You trade the short term inconvenience of moving for a school community that is a better match for your family. Neighbors are nice/important, but I personally would prioritize school over that.

I hate moving too, but I think you should just rip off the bandaid.

@SunriseMama: Have you looked at freedom of choice or something similar? Often times you may be able to request a waiver for your son to attend the other public school. Usually its a form you fill out, they will probably reject it, and then if you follow up with a personal letter, usually they grant it. For our state as long as there is space, they usually let you.

I personally would have no issue with sending my kid to a catholic school for education. I have known plenty of people that went to a catholic school and are not religious. So that seems like a non-issue to me.
But, based on how strongly you seem to feel about it my vote is for the new house. At least with the house too the money is being invested as opposed to just spent on tuition. I think a little less nice of a neighborhood and moving is not a big deal.

@SunriseMama: May I ask why the charter schools are not good options?

As for magnet schools, did you look beyond your town? Sorry if these are obvious questions, but my town only has one magnet that I don't think is that great, and one charter, that we're in the lottery for. The other magnets were outside of town, but we're okay with that commute for the benefits.

Personally, I would go with the catholic school. A 20 min drive is not bad and anytime parents are paying, I think they are more involved than in a typical situation. You love your neighbors and that may not be the case in the new neighborhood, which would really make life unenjoyable.

As far as the religion aspect goes, unless you just do not want your children to be exposed to Catholicism/religion, I do not know what the harm would be in the school.

@LBee: Yes, we have a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old. The money we've saved is the amount it would cost for both of them, assuming a 5% increase per year. Good point on the good school district home increasing in value more than our current home. Thank you!

It depends on how much I like the new house. Personally, I would be VERY uncomfortable with sending my child to a Catholic school. We are not religious and we do not believe in organized religion, especially Catholicism. I would have a really hard time sending my child to a school that teaches the religion as a subject.

Have you looked into magnet and charter options?

We have a similar situation as you (but Catholic school is fully off the table, not because of the doctrine so much as the influence the diocese in my area has on the school) and I found a lot of interesting options out there in the realm of public school.
