Graduating college, i would look for the best job first. I have seen way too many new college grads limit themselves to one location, then not be able to get a job and have to live with their parents. Looks great on a resume.....I would look for something that is going to give you a step up in your industry. I guess it really depends what you do, though. if you're a teacher, you have more options at home. if not, I'd use the job as leverage to get yourself to the location you want in a year or two. BUT if you can find the job you want in the home location, then great. i just don't always see it working out that way.

What I've noticed is before people start their families, it's usually the ideal job as first priority. But after starting a family, I'm surprised to see how many people choose location.

DH's old workplace got bankrupt and all the empolyees got *sold* (lol) to a consulting firm. They're kind of a high commodity in our area, but most of his co-workers eventually migrated to jobs that were closer to home, vs. one with pospects of upward mobility. I find it really surprising, but then again, his co-workers are known to take a whole year of paternity leave!

We are making this choice now. I'll basically be handed a job (family business) but dh will be making some huge sacrifices career wise if we move to our ideal location, which also happens to be insanely expensive... And we already live in a high cost of living area. Our outcome pretty much depends on how dh does in applying for a new job. If he doesn't get in we won't move, and if he does we probably will. It's definitely one of the hardest (if not the hardest) choice we have ever made, especially since dh has made a lot of progress his first few years where he is now.

@MrsScallop: I think it's really hard to know if you'll love a job before you're in it, since so much depends on your coworkers, your boss, your work environment (in my opinion). It's easier, to me, to know if you'll like a location. We've moved around a lot in the same area and come to know what size-ish location feels right for both of us, what weather we prefer, and what school options we'd prefer.

So, in short, I'd work from location first :)

@Corduroy:, @babyjmama: I agree! I used to not care where I lived as long as I had a job I enjoyed, but now that we have LO, I feel like we should move closer to at least one set of grandparents. I would love for LO to grow up knowing her family more than I ever did.

@Ree723: Good luck with your search! I definitely agree with what you said. I am really struggling with how the job thing will work out. Since Hubs and I are both looking, one of us will likely compromise with what job we get and the preferred location more than the other, as his family and mine are 1,500 mile apart and he is more likely to find a job just about anywhere, while my degree is more specialized and it could be harder to find the right fit.

@bisous: Ha, I can't decide if I have a dream job or not at times :)

@matador84: I'm glad you are happy with your choice!

I picked job. I can be happy just about anywhere but I need my job to be as close to ideal as possible because I spend a lot of time there! Looking for a job in a small geographic location is hard.

Location; I changed jobs when we moved to be closer to home but I liked my old job better! But for quality of life and work-home balance it was more important for me to work closer to where we live.

Hmm, we're going through this process right now and we're giving location a slight preference. We're moving internationally so we have quite the complex process but we've decided what parts of the countries on our short list we would want to live in and are focusing our job search in those areas.

It's tough because money isn't everything and it's not worth it to make a good salary and live in a crappy location, but then again, picking your dream location and not being able to find a job isn't very smart either. Before deciding on places to live, we did research into the US and UK to see what the job markets were like in various areas and what the housing/quality of life was like. We narrowed down our options from there and picked one part of the States and one part of the UK that we think we would work for us, and are now focusing on that. So to answer your question, I guess we are in the middle, giving nearly equal weight to location and job.

Location for us! We will most likely never live anywhere that's more than an hour away from either set of our parents. We are homebodies and neither of us had a close relationship with our grandparents/aunts/uncles growing up and really want that for Jake.

If you could choose to move to the area you'd like to be in (whether for friends/family or something else) then try to find a job in that area or search for the job you want no matter where it is located, which would you choose? Hubs and I are graduating soon and are starting to apply to jobs. I would love to live closer to family, but finding the perfect job would be great too!
