I feel pretty good about it! Thanks for all the insight. It was a huge decision and caused a lot of shockwaves in the district, but I feel at peace with it and it will really make life a lot easier for the family and I!

An interesting turn of events: I declined the new job. They came back recently with a large pay increase and continued to include tuition discount. Needless to say, I accepted the offer!

It might not be what I want to do permanently, but the position is a lateral move for me (public to private), and I will get to see my kids everyday and not run around like a chicken with my head cut of constantly. It will be a big learning experience and I am excited!

I'm not a teacher and don't know much about job movement, but my gut would be to take the new job offer for the lifestyle benefits it gives you now and then in 6 years or so when those benefits stop being as significant you could try and find something different that maybe has better growth or fits whatever lifestyle you have then.

I would take the new job. $15k isn't really $15k when you think of childcare for 3 kids for 4 weeks, plus tuition discounts. I'd love to be on the same schedule as my kids!

I'm not a teacher but also a state employee in another state so I get the pension loss seems big. I'd call the state retirement board and have them talk you through your options. You can certainly leave your money there with them or pull it out and put it in your 401K (at least in my state you can).

@Littlebit7: sadly enough I don’t know as much about my retirement as I should. I’m in TX and teacher retirement is historically underfunded. @Anagram: yes public to private. I’m under rule of 80 under TRS Texas, and meet my years of service by age 52. However I can’t retire until 60/62 under TRS guidelines at earliest. @petitenoisette: hard to say. Two jobs are similar but very different. Currently there are 4 of us in my job position and will be going down to 2. So my job will entail vastly more than it does now—and I already do a lot. My supervisor is amazing and supportive. New job I would be with my kids but big learning curve and would report to someone I’m not super fond of but ultimately I think I would enjoy the work.

@Anagram: Good points. Also not an expert, but I wonder if it’s possible/makes sense to leave the pension money there for now and keep window open to returning to public school once @matador84: ‘s kids are out of this school.

Hmm the pension to 401k thing would be a potential deal breaker for me (Im a public school teacher). I’m assuming the first job is a private school - I’d also be concerned about having to take on additional unpaid responsibilities but I don’t know if that’s the culture of the school. Also do any other benefits come into play (health insurance?)?

It sounds like for now the pay difference isn’t really that big taking into account tuition and summer childcare however it could be a huge difference in retirement. 9 years is a really long time.

That being said, which one did you think you’d like better? If you think you’d be happier at the new job then the switch might be worth it.

@matador84: one thing to consider is how many years you already have in your public teacher's pension (I assume current job is public) and how moving jobs affects your overall retirement picture.

There's a well known "retirement penalty" for teachers who switch states or switch careers, but that may depend on how many years you currently have vested. I'm not an expert on any of this, so you'll want to do your own research, but there's a chance that there's a big penalty if you try to withdraw the money you have in your public pension fund and try to switch it to your potential-future 401k, and at the same time, you won't have the years of service + age formula to get a very big payout if you decide to move jobs and just keep whatever you have in the pension system. I mean, you'll have way less than someone who stayed in public for all those years. You'll have your 401k at your new school, but again, you'll have fewer years to have that money compound than someone who has been working in the private school the last 15 years.

All this depends on your state. But I moved from TX to NJ and my current retirement projections if I work from now till age 70 is way lower than if I'd had all my years of service in just 1 state. When my husband mentions moving again to a potential 3rd state, I just think of how much retirement money I'd lose again.

Anyway, some retirement calculators may help you. Good luck. =)

I’d take the job offer. I did something kind of similar: accepted a job at 5k less but am now much closer to home so it’s made our lives much easier. It’s the same organization so benefits don’t change. I have no problem being “mommy tracked” for a few years. I still have a higher level job at my organization, but it’s much less stress and responsibility than my old one which is what we needed as a family right now. 15k is a lot but it sounds like maybe it would pay off with the tuition costs.

@matador84: ooo that’s a tough one. A defined benefit is a pretty appealing thing. Yet...Are you in a state that is healthy financially or one where their pension programs are chronically underfunded? With recent shifts in the fiscal security of some states and their massive spending on public worker benefits (and really writing checks that they can’t afford to cash so to speak) that might be my only reason to walk away from a pension. I don’t believe a public pension is guaranteed for life (I mean, the idea is that you have it for life, but will states be able to afford to pay workers for life if the funds are poor performing or underfunded).
That might be my only thing to make me take pause.

@matador84: + I guess you'll safe additional money on not having to pay for summer camp/childcare if you don't have family nearby that could help out during those 4 weeks a year.

@Amorini: yes it pays out as an annuity. I’m 100% vested currently. Need to find out the matching on the 401k. By my calculations (if they are correct), I would have to work about 9 years more at the job offer. But I’ll have to double check.

@crazydoglady: well it’s interesting. -2495 for one child and -4110 for the other for a total of -6605 for an 8395 paycut. However, the next year would be paid at 100% so -8220 for a -6780 paycut.

When my youngest is 3, it would be 2 @ 100% and one at 50%, so -10715 for a less than 5000 paycut.

@matador84: Same question as @crazydoglady about the tuition discount.

I’m not a teacher but just taking all of this at face value, it’s a tough one! The offer sounds good with a few exceptions and I love how it sounds like life could be much saner with being in the same schedule as your older ones. Hidden paycheck! More-involved parents sounds like a plus, too!

The thing that doesn’t make it a slam dunk is losing the state teacher retirement. I’ve never had that but I understand it’s much better than 401Kz because it’s employer paid, right? How vested are you? What would you lose? Does the new place offer a employer match to their 401K and can you make up for what you might lose by abandoning the pension?

My heart says do what makes life easier and enjoyable for your family, but the geek in me would want to justify it on paper.(or spreadsheet!)

I think I’d go for the job offer over the current job! Identical work calendar to your children’s, tuition discount, good retirement benefits (I’m assuming, I don’t know anything about 401k!) Sounds like an ideal job to me!

Job Offer: 15K less than what you make now, but you would be working where your older two kids go to school and will for the next 5-6 years. Tuition would come at a 50% and 100% discount. Retirement would be a 401K. Would cater to a more involved-parent clientele but also would have an opportunity to learn new things. 225 day contract/1 month off in summer. Work calendar would be identical to children’s school calendar.

Current job: more pay (by 15k), but would pay for tuition for children 1 & 2 at regular cost. Potential for growth and promotion but more job responsibility. Would be able to become more proficient in a second language. Retirement plan is state teacher retirement. 204 day contract, 6 weeks off in summer. Work calendar calls for a need for childcare for older two children 4 weeks out of the year.

Also one more child in the picture who is in daycare full time until age 3. If job offer is taken, would attend school at a 50% tuition discount.
