Well, I may be a bit biased since I decided to experimentally cut dairy and soy, and am now contemplating cutting wheat, without consulting her doc, but I don't see the harm in trying (other than the cost and any transitioning difficulty she may have). When we had to supplement in the hospital, they automatically had us use Nutramigen and Alimentum anyway just because they are good formulas that don't have negative effects on most kids.

But, I agree with the others, that there is a bigger problem if you don't have much faith in her doc. You need a pediatrician that you believe can give appropriate guidance and trust to refer you elsewhere when he/she doesn't have much insight him/herself. Pediatricians are experts at dealing with neurotic parents, so if yours can't help you with genuine concerns, I think you can do better. It sounds like you are in an area with great specialists, so take advantage of it! If you are in the Cincy area, I have some friends who may have a good pediatrician to recommend.

Trust that mama instinct. Giving J Alimentum was the best decision I made when he was an infant. He was a new man.

ETA: J refused to drink the RTF version of Alimentum.

I agree with @Anagram: that if you're going to try Alimentum, it's worth sucking it up and getting the RTF. J is doing a lot better on the RTF! It doesn't have the corn maltodextrin that the powder version has, which eliminates one potential allergen and source of issues. Plus he finds it a lot easier to drink for some reason - we actually have to slow him down!

@Mae: we tried the Alimentum, that didn't work (but she has no problem with the taste, so don't worry about that part). Then much later (when LO was 7 months and I wanted to stop pumping), we tried Neocate. That "worked' but she wouldn't take it alone at that point. The most I ever got her to drink was 2 oz Neocate and 4 oz breast milk.

I was told that Alimentum and Nutragimen are similar in that the milk proteins are really broken down but still slightly present. Neocate and Elecare don't have dairy at all.
Alimentum is pricey...but Neocate is insane. However, some insurances cover these if they are medically necessary.

I think it can't hurt to try! Alimentum comes in ready-to-feed jugs so I would start with one of those, since ready-to-feed is a little easier on their tummies.

We tried Nutramigen, but it didn't work. We then got a Rx for Neocate and that worked. Thank goodness for Neocate!

Eta: Nutramigen is really stinky! It's also expensive!

@LovelyPlum: thanks :) Yea I'm giving this whole milk mixing thing the weekend to see if it works. But if not I'm thinking I'm going to call on monday and demand a referral to a pediatric gi. There is a whole department of gi/nutrition docs @ children's here. I just don't think my ped as any clue about eating issues.

@Mae: I have no idea about the formula, but I am a huge proponent of go with your gut. If this doc is giving you crap, ditch them. Seriously. You have two of the best resources in the country at your disposal in the children's hospital and university's hospital by you. I am partial, since the pedis there saved a good friend's son's life, but you can't argue with that. Get rid of the baggage and get on the phone until someone listens to you. You and F deserve better!

@wonderstruck: There are a bunch of posts about it, but basically she refuses to eat a lot of the time. Seems perfectly happy to not eat. But just won't eat. Yesterday she ate fine 3 times, then refused to eat the rest of the day. (Until I forced her at bed time because she'd had no significant food for almost 9 hours at that point).

Also keep in mind it takes about 4 days for dairy to leave your system and 4 days for it to leave theirs. So you have a week before Mich relief if you breastfeed as well

We use Nutramegin. besides the cost and horrible taste, switchcing formulas can upset LOs tummy. It usually takes at least a week dor them to get used to it and see a difference so if you do switch it'll be at least a 2 week commitment.

I have no idea about the formula but I agree on getting a second opinion. With W, I feel like they should have been more proactive testing his diaper, etc. I called the nurse line when we started seeing mucus in his poop (after he began experiencing terrible nighttime sleep and slow weight gain) and they agreed I could try cutting dairy but probably the issue was just that I needed to hold him upright longer after nursing. The doctor never really said anything about it. G's ped got me in for an appointment on a Saturday and tested his diaper while I was there and are having us follow up in 2 weeks. Totally different response to same exact symptoms.

We got Alimentum through a prescription from our ped and only paid a copay for the month's supply. Check with your insurance. Alimentum worked for R (milk protein and soy protein formulas made her break out into hives). The ped said Nutramigen would've been the next step if Alimentum didn't work.

Alimentum worked wonders for us, but it's expense and does taste terrible (LO didn't mind but yuck), so I wouldn't switch unless you needed to.

What's going on with LO's eating? We had major spit-up/gas issues before finally switching to Gerber Soothe. It's not MSPI, but it worked wonders for us so just thought I'd throw it out there as a suggestion.

I would get a 2nd opinion first. My two LOs did really well on Nutramigen. It is very expensive, though, so I wouldn't use it unless you know LO really needs it.

Ok so LO tried Almentum and it was ok. Nutramigen ruined him. He was covered in hives and eczema. Keep in mind, he is severely allergic to milk. The only thing that worked for us was Neocate but we pay $160 a week for it. Keep that in mind

Yet another feeding post so I can start a poll.

Cliffsnotes: Something is wrong with LO's eating and no one at my ped office seems to be taking me seriously. She's on zantac but I'm not convinced it is doing anything. I asked a nurse on the triage line at my ped office today if I could/should try a dairy free formula and she said she wouldn't recommend doing that without making (yet another) appointment with the doctor (who I sort of have no trust in at this point).

Is there any DOWN SIDE to trying a MSPI formula? Is it harmful in any way at all? If it isn't harmful-- what could it hurt to try it with her and see what it helps?

And if I do try it... which one should I try first?
