@scg00387: Amazing! We're on Day 2 of crib naps in a row! I'm hoping I can keep this up - though I feel like I've been inside the house all day. But I'm going to try to stick this out! It's the first day I've been able to get her in a sleep sack for naps and she barely fought it the 2nd nap!

@Schatzie23: Yes! This is me! I've been doing nurse to nap in my bed for a couple of months, but I'm freaked out about the rolling and I build a fortress and set up the camera every time! Glad to hear it worked out for you fairly quickly! I'm hoping the same is true for us!

@LittleFox: Good idea! I should pack the Kindle in my car! ;)

We're struggling with something similar right now. LO flips out in the crib, and nothing but nursing to sleep seems to soothe him. We're going to try sleep lady or no cry sleep solution (I have both out from the library, so reading them first).

LO will nap for over an hour in the car, though. I get desperate and bring a book, then just sit in my car and read the whole time.

@shopaholic: well the 45 mins is if we are driving on the highway. Around our house errands is usually 30 mins max. Last weekend she fell asleep and we would be home in 10 mins so she would wake up when we got home so we drove around. The last afternoon nap is 30 mins max, even in the car. Like clockwork, she wakes up.

When my son was very little, I would nurse him to sleep, but I could never put him down! I wound up nursing him on my side on my bed and then he'd fall asleep and I'd unlatch him after a while and sneak out. However, this of course could no longer work as soon as he could roll easily (despite me putting things along the edge and stuff and a camera on the bed with him). Finally I had to give up and figure something else out. I figured out that he did much better falling asleep when he had a bottle instead of nursing for naps (cause with nursing he'd just want to lay with/on me). So we set a routine where we would go into his room, turn the fan on, sit in the rocking chair, have a bottle, rock, and I'd sing a song. He'd get sleepy and when he was done with his bottle he'd push it away. Then I'd stand up and rock him a little and tell him I love him. Then I put him in his crib and rub his bum a little. He would occasionally cry, but usually he'd go to sleep or at least be quiet until he fell asleep. We'd go in after 2 minutes if he didn't stop crying. Then I'd pick him up and hug him and if he was cuddly I would hold him and rock a little or offer more bottle, if he arched, I would put him back in the crib. It did take about a week before he was totally down for this method, but he never cried more than 2-5 minutes at a time. And he sleeps SOOOO much better now!

@shopaholic: If I were you, I'd pick a routine, and a time schedule (for us, it has been wake - 3 hours - nap - 3 hours - nap - 4 hours bed time, roughly), and a method, and stick to it for a week and see what happens. If rocking doesn't seem to help/work maybe just patting or shhing? It doesn't sound like she's going to be happy about anything -- which is sort of how my LO was (it wasn't like he was snuggling me, rocking peacefully!). But, after 2 days I will say even though we weren't "there" yet, he relaxed into the routine and didn't fight it as hard. He seemed to get what we were working towards if you know what I mean.

@scg00387: I have tried, but she usually freaks out, starts crying, rolling, literally flips out. Sometimes she will calmly play in the crib for awhile before she starts crying. Only once I got her to fall asleep on her own.

I tried doing a nap-time routine a couple times 1-2 months ago. But she did NOT like anything remotely similar to her night-time routine in her room. Sleepsack, sound machine, a lovey or paci, and just being in her room would piss her off. I keep trying various things though. So maybe I'll have to pick something and just be consistent.

@shopaholic: Ummm I didn't keep notes or anything but I think it was maybe a week and a half from rocking 100% to sleep until he was going in awake. But I also think he was younger than K... What does she do if you just put her in her crib around when she should be napping?? Do you have a naptime routine?

@sunny: That's greatly encouraging! I have found that when I can get her to sleep deeply at home, I can get over an hour now! We've been working on naps for a couple of months (though I admit I'm not very consistent). I've been diligently tracking naps though and going to go over my app and try to figure out a time pattern to start being more consistent. Heheh - better bring your passport! :)

We are mostly housebound during naptime now :-( The upside is usually its at a predictable time and the naps are a bit longer. The past few days she has been napping up to 1.5 hrs which is amazing considering she used to nap as little as 25 min!

@shopaholic: I totally keep driving sometimes! Hubs says just to make sure I don't drive so far that I end up in Canada! :-)

@scg00387: I think I will try that, though I have a hard time rocking K to sleep. I just did it though, and it took me holding her pretty tight and snug for 20 min. to rock her to sleep (after 1 hour of other failed methods  ). How long did it take where you didn't have to rock anymore?

@Smurfette: That's our problem really. The weekends really kill me because no one else, even DH, really understand how much she needs a nap. I've been trying really hard to get at least the first nap to be a good one at home. Ha! 45 min. would be great for a car nap! She had a 19 min. one today. I wished I had kept driving for another 1/2 hr!

R was napping great in her crib at home and at day care. Then a couple weekends in a row, we were out. So she got used to napping in her car seat or the Ktan. Then she stopped napping at day care. So we had to nap train all over.

So routine is key. On the weekends we make sure she gets at least one nap in her crib. We just leave errands /lunch for after her morning nap. You just make plans around it.

Totally worth staying home cause she will take an hour plus nap in her crib and in the car it is like 30, maybe 45 mins.

@shopaholic: I dont remember the difference between those 3 books but we did the same for naps that we did at night - rocking until super duper drowsy, putting in, picking up if crying ensued, rinse and repeat until not upset - leave the room, he fell asleep. I would give it about 30 minutes of trying and then take a break to reset. It took a week or so to see a marked improvement and then a switch flipped and he could be put in wide awake and he'd put himself to sleep happily.

He has never/won't sleep in the carseat or carrier so yes, we are home for his naps.

Subscribing. My K sounds exactly like your K in regards to her nap and night time sleep style.

My LO refuses to nap all day at daycare. These days the only time she'll nap is on DH's chest. I told him yesterday we had to start nap training her in her crib and I think I broke DH's heart. I'm hoping if we nap train her on the weekends, it will help with the daycare naps.

@shopaholic: on the weekends we still try to be home for naps, or at least the first nap. After that he will snooze in the ergo or car if we're out and about. I like to have him get at least one good crib nap in tho!

@hilsy85: Thanks. I wish soothing her next to the crib would work. I have to hide from her while she's in the crib or she'll just want to play or cry.

Ah - I guess that's the trade-off for good naps - getting locked in at home. What about weekends? Does he nap well when you go out?

We didn't use a particular method for nap training--I basically jut sat In the room with him until he fell asleep and soothed him from next to the crib.

As for nap routine, yes, once we nap trained it became really important to try to e home during nap times. This became more important once he dropped to 2 naps that were at consistent times, mainly bc he naps best in his crib now. So yes we are somewhat house bound but its really not that big a deal--and worth it for a good nap! And of corse if we're out he will nap in the ergo or car seat if necessary.

Up till now, I've been getting K to nap anyway, anyhow, anywhere I can. But even my time-tested tricks are not always working these days. I've looked into these 3 types of non-CIO nap-training methods. Not sure which one to start trying?

- Sears' The Baby Sleep Book
- The No-Cry Sleep Solution
- Secrets of the Baby Whisperer

The last one seems to be a good middle ground, but I wanted to get more practical input. I don't remember the last time I've finished a book!

A little background on K's sleep style. She FIGHTS naps. She just wants to be a social bee, looking, chatting, etc. She will sometimes fall asleep quietly on her own, nursing, in the swing, or carrier. She has never, not once, fallen asleep crying or "fussing for a few minutes", which is why I don't believe CIO would work on her. Her cries escalate and get worse and worse and hard to calm down. I think a record was 1 hour and 40 min. on a car ride. She also does not calm down if I just come and pat her or shush her while she's in the crib crying. It just makes things worse. She doesn't fall asleep rocking either.

Also, I don't like to be stuck at home all the time. If you nap-train, are you basically locked-in to your nap routines at home in the crib everyday? How does your LO nap when you are traveling or out of the home?

Her night-time sleep routine has been great for months and she goes down pretty easily, FWIW.

Thanks!
