I chose the first option but option 3 sounds great too. 5 miles is not a lot but how much time would it add to your commute?

I voted walk to school, because that is what sealed the deal on our house. I can not imagine dealing with the bus or car pool lines while trying to get to work in the mornings. I can literally stand on my front lawn and watch my son walk down the cul de sac to the back entrance of the elementary school. Middle and high schools will be bus, but I am fine with that for older kids.

@LindsayInNY: a few miles, plus.
@regberadaisy: across the street in option 1, very close to the crosswalk with a crossing guard. I could see walking her to school every morning before leaving for work.
@aprk: #3 is in your area. :)
@Sprite: with an only child, I think having lots of kids around is a big deal for me. Even though I didn't hang out with all the kids on the street I lived on growing up, I did become friendly with some of them, at least during our elem and middle school years. That's when it really matters to have kids around, right? And maybe a little closer, but really we're looking in the exact opposite direction from where we are now.

I would consider how much would you guys realistically use a pool if it were super close (unless it's indoor that you could use year round)? I think I'd pick being closer to a greenway over a pool, just because you could use it for more of the year for walks and biking and a good place to burn off energy.

Personally, lots of kids in a neighborhood wouldn't be a huge deciding factor for me, although I did grow up in a neighborhood without many kids my age, so it was what I was used to. Just because there are lots of kids doesn't necessarily mean they are kids that your daughter will get along with and be friends with.

Now I'm curious what parts of the area you're considering! Closer to me?? ;)

As a kid, the ability to walk to school from my house was huge. I loved the little bit of freedom it gave me. As a second choice I would do number 3. Obviously walkability is important to me. As far as things go, I'd not really make distance to or presence of a pool a top priority.

I would choose more kids and a pool. Neighborhood pools are a big deal here and we choose our new home based on the fact there were 7 pools in our community. We also choose a neighborhood with a lot of young families and also lots of playgrounds.

My husband says the convenience of stuff to walk to is key, and makes up for the extra few minutes to work

I vote for the last one - cheaper is good in the long run, and who knows if more kids will move in.

Walkability and proximity to shopping, coffees etc would be more important to me than a pool.

I'd choose neighborhood #1 as well. I'd choose closer schools and shopping over a pool. #3 would be my 2nd choice.

Realistically, how far of walk are the schools in either options. Depending on the distance would you really let your child walk to school?

For option #3 - how far away are schools? What's more important for walking distance - schools, pool, shopping, etc.?

I chose the neighbourhood with more kids and school in walking distance. However as a second choice I might consider the home that is 80K less

We are deep into our search for our next home and are working out what type of area we would prefer to be in. I'm curious about what you all would do.

No matter where we move to, the schools will be top notch so, that is not in the options below. Price only matters in one scenario. So.....which neighborhood would you pick?

They all have their pluses and minuses: Walk to school. Cheaper house, pay it off sooner. Pool/no pool.
