It's thick and sturdy so I don't worry about putting my infant on it, whereas a thinner one may not protect the baby against rocks/sticks at a playground. I can't say enough good things about it. Picnics, something for baby to lie on for outdoor tummy time, beach days, pretend forts, etc. Perfect for our needs. </p> <p>Since your park is close by, the bulkiness shouldn't be an issue. The monkey mat was too flimsy for me, and I returned it. I bought a similar one to the stripes at Costco, and it has held up well. It folds up really small and it shakes out great. We use it a lot at the beach.
