Maternity. I mean if it were me, id drop the birth ones. I'm not a huge fan of maternity (they're just ok) but things get so hectic with l&d I personally wouldn't have wanted to deal with another person. But that's me and obviously your ideas are way different than mine, lol. If they're all important go with asking for the discount. If you're looking to drop one I'd say the maternity. If you take bump pics already I think that's just as special. As someone who's about 9 months pp, I don't really want to look at pics of myself pregnant but pics of newborn LO are nice. Disclaimer.. In truth we only did the in hospital newborn photos (Bella baby.)

like others have said, i would ask for the discount first. if that's a no-go, then while maternity photos are really fun and nice, that would probably be the one i would drop.

I like the idea of having 1-3 nice maternity shots to remember but I don't think you need a full "session" of them.

I vote either suck it up and use the coupon or drop the maternity session.

We didn't do a maternity one and weren't able to do newborn. I definitely wish we had newborn photos, I don't miss not having the maternity ones.

@T.H.O.U.: Wow, I didn't even realize that was it per session... I know they normally charge $400 for portrait sessions so I am sure the bulk is coming from the Birth. Which I totally understand.

@artbee: We get CD's filled with all the fully edited digital copies and full print releases. Thats what we did for our wedding and they were totally cool with it, even admitted it would cost more for them to print since they pay what we pay plus they have to make a profit. And we got quite a few from our e-pic and day-after session so I am sure we would get even more with a cute baby! lol

I said to suck it up and ask. You might phrase it like "oh did that quote include the 50% off thing we got from after our wedding?" They shouldn't have a problem doing that. If you're shameless like me and if that doesn't work or if she waffles you can say that you guys were only expecting to pay $1,200 or so, so you'll have to get back to her on which one you'll be cutting. If I was your photog and a friendly customer said that, I would come back and say something like "can you do $1,300 for all 3?" as to not lose you for one session.

If you STILL can't get the price lowered, I'd cut maternity. You can even try to find a friend or a budding photographer to take those for you for cheap (and if you talked to your photog as I said above, they'd understand when they saw them on FB.) I feel like having a newbie do maternity would be less stressful than newborn!

Before even dropping them, I would ask about the coupon! You have it, so you may as well use it, right? I think that would make the overall price more reasonable, and you just may be able to swing all three.

@Mrs Hedgehog: $1,650 divided by three is about $550 per session.

I would try to see if she could still do all three, but maybe just a really short maternity with the discount. If you ask for the 50% discount on one session (say $250 off) that would bring you down to $1,400 which is more like what your husband could maybe swallow.

I don't think it hurts to ask for a discounted price. So I would start there if I were you. Otherwise I would skip maternity photos.

If I had to cut one, I would cut maternity...I am biased because I didn't do maternity photos though...I didn't really want them/didn't know what I would do with them. @artbee: makes a good point though about probably getting lots of newborn photos at the birth

I think that's a great price for all of those pictures! Do you get a digital copy, or do you have to pay for more prints from them? I think I'd buy them all.

But if you absolutely have to cut one out, I'd probably not do newborns. I'm sure your photographer will be taking lots of pictures of your LO at the birth photoshoot.... so I'm not sure it's a need to have more pictures just a few days later.

Okay, so our wedding photographers, who we ADORE both professionally and personally, are going to do some more pictures for us. We were wanting Maternity, Birth, and Newborn. The wife (husband/wife team) has expanded into those areas and honestly? Drool....

Now, she quoted is 1650 for all 3 sessions which, considering what all goes into each of them and how we have seen them priced separately through other photographers doesn't sound crazy. Still, expensive. Mr. Hedgie had apparently imagined it being around 1200 for all 3 and isn't a fan of the extra 450 he wasn't expecting. Now, we did recieve a "coupon" in the mail from them after our wedding for 50% off the next session we had with them. Obviously this wouldn't apply to the whole thing, just maybe the maternity. The thing is, I feel weird asking for it since we have become more than just vendor/customer. The wife and I talk from time to time and she has even invited me to quite a few play dates (I admittedly have yet to go on). I love them but I don't know that we can swing 1650 for all these pictures.

So, here is my question, what do I drop, if any?

The only one I refuse to drop is the birth. That is the most important. I also am not a huge fan of photo studios. I like more natural pictures vs posed with a backdrop. Mr. Hedgie would never go for a studio either.

And if we did decide to just go through someone else, they would see the pictures on Facebook! Also, they are kinda expecting us to use them at this point and I still REALLY want to. I am just nervous about the cost considering we are about to bring a baby home...
