I was just in the standard semi-reclined position (almost lying on my back) b/c I had an epidural. I pushed the baby out really quickly and easily in the end though, so no need to experiment with other positions.

@regberadaisy: Yea I didnt realize it was that uncommon either. but I think you also have to prepare for squatting because it can be a difficult position for someone who isnt used to it and thats why a lot of people get tired in that position.
I have been squatting a lot, first with the help of DH and now on my own to try to get used to being in that position.

I didn't realize squatting is that uncommon? My hospital provides a squatting bar and I'm thinking it might be the best route for me but we'll see.

I had an epidural and was on my back the whole time and it took me two hours to get her out.

I was on my back pushing even though I didn't have an epidural. I wish now I would have had something else offered to me or tried something else but I was so tired (she was born at 7:22 a.m & I pushed for 1.5 hours so I had been awake for over 24 hours when she was born) & in a lot of pain & just didn't even think to ask.

Pushing on your back seems to be the least effective and often the most uncomfortable method, but you don't really have a choice when you've had an epidural. On the other hand, you can't feel the pain, so you don't care as much!

@Mrsbells: My hospital would have allowed squatting if I didn't have an epidural! I tried pushing on all 4s (didn't work!), and pushed on my back when I gave birth.

I only pushed on my back since I had an epidural. It was most effective when I had to pull on a towel that the nurse was holding. It took DD 2.5 hours to come out.

I tried a bunch of different ones, but was most comfortable and most effective on my back.

I had an epidural with both, but I tried out a few different positions. Side-pushing was worst for me; I just couldn't feel enough. Squatting was super hard because my legs got very tired very fast; it might've been better if I had a squatting stool, though? I ended up not pushing very long with either baby, and I ended up delivering both while lying on my back, which required the least effort.

I tried a bunch of different ones and while lying on my side was a bit more effective, I wasn't very comfortable that way so I ended up on my back because I was too exhausted to hold the other positions for very long.

I had an epidural so I didn't have much of a choice. LO took an hour to come out, and the nurse said the average for the first baby is 2 hours so I was happy with that.

For those of you who had a vaginal birth, did you get to push in different positions and which position would you say was the most effective for you? I'm thinking I will want to push in squatting position that I got from my book on Bradley birth, but I'm not sure if the hospital will be ok with that or not.
