I like the flexibility of two twins. Then when he is older and having sleepovers, but too old to want to share his bed with his friend, you're covered.

We don't have the luxury of fitting two twins but will likely go with a trundle or bunkbed for the above reason.

@LBee: I like the flexibility of two twins. Plus you can get one of those connector thingies if you want to turn it into a King for guests.

Thanks for the advice!

To answer the question, we wanted the option for when guests came to have a spare bed, especially since his room had the space for two beds. He doesn't play in his room (he has a playroom) so it's dead empty space in his room or dead space filled with a sometimes used bed. It also keeps room sharing on the table in the future. I also like the look and have the flexibility to do it. I wasn't really wondering the validity of my two options, though, I was more looking for advice on whether I should do twin or full.

College dorms usually have twin beds. It would not be a big deal for him to have a twin throughout HS.

That being said since you have the space I'd go with a Full. Unless there is permanent room sharing I think a second bed is unnecessary and prone to becoming a junk collecting surface.

When I read your question, my first thought was why not just one twin? And I see others have thought the same! I think a twin is still big enough to read/cuddle for now. We just bought my 3.5 year old a twin bed and it seems like plenty of space for now. I only ever had a twin when I lived at home and I never really felt like I needed a bigger bed.

I had a twin in my bedroom at home through college. My brother had a full the whole time, but only because his room doubled as the guest room.

We chose a twin for DS so he would have more space in his room, which isn't large.

I'm with @Adira and @Greentea: what is the second twin for?

We just got DS out of his crib and put him in a twin. Honestly, I slept in a twin until I got married. I had a twin at home and all my college dorms/apts had twins.

If you plan on using it as a guest room occasionally, I'd recommend looking into a trundle bed or an air mattress.

You can always upgrade if the size doesn't work, but no one ever wants to downgrade. I vote twin.

I don't see a problem with having a twin bed until you go to college? Can someone explain the hate? :)

I had the same question when we just moved DS1 out of his toddler bed and we ended up going with a full as we already had a bed frame and thought we could use part of his crib as the headboard (we couldn't :( ). I do like the full as it's easier to lay with him and read books but it's also way too easy for him to ask for us to lay with him and accidentally fall asleep.

DS2 already has a twin bed in his room with a mattress underneath that he can use for sleepovers when he's old enough. This bed matched his furniture more than his brother's or we would have had him use it.

Why would you go with two twins? Just to have an extra bed for sleepovers / company?

We're going through this right now, but debating between a full and a twin. I'm leaning towards the full as I think it's more practical. DH said he had a twin until he moved out ( what?! I've always had a queen so that's foreign to me. ) So he's leaning towards the twin.

My vote is for a full :)

We have a queen and twin laying around and just moved DS1 to a twin floor bed that's in a Privacy Pop tent as his transition bed. I think a queen or full would be too big for him from a crib - I feel like he'd feel scared. The tent plus fuzzy blankets and all his stuffed animals make a cozy little den and he's transitioned really well. He loves our big Cal King bed but it's because he equates it with snuggle time with us before bed. If he had a big bed I can see him trying to use that as an excuse to get us to lay with him.

I don't think it's possible to "never decorate" again. You will have to eventually when they have their own tastes and interests or move. You can reassess then, but I would just do a smaller bed for now. We like the floor bed option because we don't have to worry about him falling out of bed.

I'd just do a full. Can always just drag in an air mattress for sleep overs but I feel like always having 2 twin beds in a room without needing both just takes up space...

We just took both our boys out of their toddler beds and into one queen together and its working out great. They were both always crawling into bed with us so now one of us could just go lay with them comfortably to help them fall asleep. i would go with a queen, he can use it all the way up to college!

I would do two twins. I don't know your entire situation but two twins would be great for sharing, guests, etc.

I'm not sure what we'll do. Right now we might do twin with trundle, otherwise two twins (2 girls).

Just a thought - why not one twin (perhaps with a trundle) rather than two (assuming it's just for one kid, perhaps that's not the case)? Nice to have more space in the bedroom not taken up by beds. I always had a twin bed growing up, even in high school, in a suburban house, and never thought about it as being too small.

We just switched DD to her big girl room and bed. She's in a queen and LOVES it. I didn't want to have to buy a twin and all the fixins only to eventually switch her anyway. Plus we had the extra queen as a guest bed...

If the goal is to never redecorate again, I'd do a full bed. I guess he's have some sleepovers as a child, but probably not many and probably not at all as a teen. I don't really understand having an unused bed around just taking up space and collecting junk.

E is 4 and got a full bed in his big boy room because he got the guest bed when we turned the guest room into little sister's nursery. He loves it and I find him sprawled across it diagonally most nights.

we gave our son our queen bed, and it has backfired on us. it actually takes up more room than I thought, and every night for the last two weeks he wakes up in the middle of the night crying until one of us agrees to "snuggle him" in his bed. its full on musical beds in our house now. I MISS THE CRIB!!!!

but thats just us! if you lay down the law from the beginning of not sleeping in his bed you may be fine..

I like having a full sized bed in my son's room, it's nice to be able to sit there together and read before bed (which we don't do, lol) or we have an extra space for guests.

Eventually, we might do an underbed trundle for sleepovers.

I've been obsessing over this and I'm pretty sure @jape14: is going to defriend me if I make her consider the various pros and cons one more time.

If you had the option when decorating your child's "big boy" room, would you do a full bed or two twin beds?

Items of note:
- Twin beds are about $150 more expensive (not including need to get additional bedding and mattress)
- Little buddy is about average size
- I dream of never having to redecorate again, but know that's probably not an option - I have guy friends who say that they did twin until college?!
- Room comfortably fits both options
